Memories & nostalgia...remember when/how/what/why and wh

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

This idea comes from "currently watching" when memories of the past in our lives came rushing in. mh, MB and smiscandlon and it ended like this...
smiscandlon wrote:It could easily have warped my fragile little mind, but I turned out OK didn't I?

Didn't I? :|
 Oh Steven bless you! ;D

Yes, I think you turned out OK because you get me but I remember when I used to ask myself that very same question which lead me to really deep thoughts in the mind and a bit of depression which comes around once in awhile, usually on those unexpected moments.

Just think of your fragile little mind being totally intact and the rest are all just weird. It's works on occasion.

So the above was an example and I would like to see this thread bring back the good old days that were spent by you and yours or family or other hl members and just a case of happy memories or scary memories or sad memories we have of each other and that make us people.

Smells help with notalgia too and it's cool to go back to the earliest memory you have that meant something to you. Like the smell of freshly mowed grass I adore, I have no idea why but be it, it has something...

Roast potatoes! No one else can beat my grandmother's potatoes, they have all tried but no one has ever succeeded. My younger sister and I were always with my grandparents during the holidays coming from working divorced parents and I remember Nanna (that's what we call my grandmother) saying "Love how many roast potatoes do you want?" and me saying "six" and meaning it. It was my answer for years and I ate them all I tell you! :D

Watching 2001 - A Space Oddysey on telly one Chrimbo.

I must have been 6 or 7, and I just sat there totally spellbound by the whole thing. I never got to see how it finished till years later cos the family made me turn it off, so it's got this sense of mystery unfolding to it that still conjures up one of those warm little glows inside me.

Also - some old dogs we had in the family when I was a kid. There was one who we had since before I was born, and he used to watch over my pram and not let anyone go near me. I'm lucky I got the chance to get to know this dog a bit later on, cos he was the most fantastic animal I've ever met.

If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.

Yeah I know what you mean mh, those movies turned off by family members, I around 6 or 7 got home from holiday with the grandfolks and we had programmed the video recorder that was VHS at ours, BETA the other option in those days and we had taped the movie "Birds" *I'm worse than pathetic when it comes to names something that has never reached that level of total remembrance and only with names I add* but the neighbour literally came running across the road when she had heard we were watching the movie, to tell us to turn it off and my grandmother out of curtisy turned it off I think but then added "they do watch worse movies than that I'm affraid" but we didn't get to see it. Weird.

Mention of animals...oh dear a can of worms - hee! not literally...

In my dad's home when growing up and watching all this horror on the tube was extra freaked out as there were the trophies of a hunter hanging on the wall, you know that springbok head that just hangs there with those glazed eyes that seem to watch your every move 24/7. Never mind the bodies of the animals in mat form that we were forced to walk on. And then you've watched horror involving spirits and ghosts and find yourself staying awake until the sun comes up, sweating in your bed as you are exhausted from hearing the night sounds that are extreme in your head. It was a hard time growing up, lordy.

Debs, Debs, Debs... ;D

Currently watching Metallica - Some Kind Of Monster and I guess that brings back memories of the first gig I went to ... Metallica at Glasgow SECC in 1990. Warrior Soul supporting and both bands f*cking rocked. :notworthy: Couldn't hear properly for about a week afterward...

One of my earliest memories is when I was about 6, me and my younger brother both had chicken pox, and we stayed over at my Grandma and Grandad's flat. I can't remember why.

Or my Auntie Edith's 80th birthday party in Blackpool. She wasn't really our Auntie, she was my Grandad's stepmother, but "I'm too young to be called Granny" She died a couple of years ago, two weeks short of her 106th birthday. Still too young to be called Granny, bless her. She was born in 1897; it seems incredible to have lived in three different centuries.

was talking about this on lj today - the smell of greek islands - olive groves, pine needles and sun oil. just thinking of the smell makes me yearn to go back - argh I'm doing it now!

also eating chicken soup at my nan's when off school sick as a nipper - love in a cold climate on the telly - but then getting scared by crown court and hiding under the table playing shop until it was over.

Yup, I remember half-day closing.

Leeds markets still shut at lunchtime on Wednesdays (I think).

But I seem to recall that Oldham wasn't Wednesday. ???

I remember when I had a Wast line, One chin, no Grey Hair, when I had no Hair in my Nose, Ears or on Back, when I could get over a hang over in about a couple of Hours rather than a couple of days, when a pint was Eighty Pence, a Fivers worth of Petrol Half filled your Car and a Tenner would fill it to the brim and when a wee old Man would come out and put the fuel in the Car for you, when the Summers were hot and the Winter's cold........
