I like this unusual film.
What's to understand and or "Get"?
Just experience it.

I must check general chat more often! There's a thread about Zubrowka, I missed several birthday threads, a baby has been born, and - oh my goodness! - dear PIB has made a joke that everybody can understand! Cool!
Now, a quick answer to the question, the first that I can think of are: Pulp Fiction, Trainspotting, Star Wars, anything by Lynch except the Straight Story, anything by Woody Allen, Monty Python stuff and Bridget Jones - these are the films that I'd been told were awesome and super great, but I found them extremely boring and totally unmoving myself.
All of you who don't get Apocalypse Now, did you read the book first?

i suggest everyone throw out their stupid hollywood movies and buy a collection of Joseph Conrad books to replace them.
Apocalypse Now is "a good movie" but the book is one of the finest pieces of literary works, and not because of its literary merits (which probably are considerable anyway).

You don't need to have read Heart of Darkness to "get" Apocalypse Now IMO. I love Apocalypse Now and (to my shame) have never read Conrad.itnAklipse wrote:i suggest everyone throw out their stupid hollywood movies and buy a collection of Joseph Conrad books to replace them.

Which Woody Allen movies did you see btw ?
And now the flicks I didn't get...
2001 a space odyssey - saw it at least three times, never understood the end, didn't care to read the book
The exorcist - found it pretty dull and I do like horror movies
Nosferatu - I am into German expressionism, but it's not the one expressionist movie I'd recommend
Tarzan (Johnny Weismuller version) - found it so boring I didn't even watch it till the end
Shocker (by Wes Scream Craven) - what the... it's just veeeeeeery bad
Dracula by Coppola - all appearance, no substance
Plan 9 from outerspace - they say it's so bad it must be the work of a genius. I just found it very bad and wasn't impressed at all. I did like Tim Burton's Ed Wood though. Speaking of which...
Tim Burton's Planet of the apes - when a talented movie maker sells his soul to Hollywood
And it goes on and on and on...
Edit : Star Wars episode 1, 2, 3 (the Disney ones) - one word : HERESY !!!
Oh and three more : Kill Jar Jar !!!

markfiend: you're right, the movie works on its own accord and has its own merits, but i think the book would give it more context.
As for reading Conrad, i think it's nice that the finest lietarature written in english language comes from someone whose native language english wasn't
Btw, i almost prefer Victory to Heart of Darkness.
As for Monty Python, it surely is most overrated thing there is, but then the vacuous and ill-intending critics have always dictated what the public should like

Boondock Saints. What an utter pish movie, pretending to be some kind of B-movie but lacking every single quality of those.

Here's another : Halloween.
In the first episode, Mike Myers isn't supposed to have any kind of super power. He's just some seriously deranged redneck. And yet he's utterly indestructible. And they never explain why ! This guy gets blinded, shot many times... and yet he keeps coming at you. Why ?!
Get off your ass you lazy scriptwriter ! Try to something good for chrissake !

Ramon Ramone's list of great and so-so movies..in no particular order.
Great Movies:
Used Cars : Kurt Russel and Jack Wardens finest hours ( plus the dog steals most of the scenes)
The Thing : Proof you don't need to be a CGI nerd to make a masterpiece of horror and suspense - and no hysterical women!!
Jaws: I've only swam in the sea twie since!!
The Usual Suspects : By the end of the movie I thought 'I' was Kaiser Soze too!!
Fight Club: After the third of fourth viewing - I got it, and loved it.
American Pie : The Teen movie of the era. Suck me Beautiful!
Silence of the lambs : I love going to Boots and watching the sulky floor staff when you announce that 'It puts the lotion in the basket'
Plus : Dog Soldiers, Ginger Snaps, The LOTR's Trilogy, A Night at the Roxbury, ..I could go on forever.
Now for some ..not so good movies.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show : WTF was all that fuss about ?!! It was awful.
Soul Survivors : Eliza Dushku's worst hour.
Starship troopers 2 . Calling this a number two was about right!
Any movie from 1990- starring Steve Martin, Chevy Chase and Will Smith.
Alien V Predator : Never have so many FanBoys wanted to top themselves at once.
American Pie 3.
Brain freeze..but I'll be back.

I have to admit, I went with faint hope that it couldn't possibly be as ridiculous as it turned out to be. Sorry to say, the out lining script I read for AVP 2 is even worse.Badlander wrote:This one was predictable, wasn't it ?Ramone wrote: Alien V Predator : Never have so many FanBoys wanted to top themselves at once.
