Why does it matter?

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

What gives you the impression that anyone is "outraged" by Muslim women wearing veils?

And do you honestly think the UK populace just casually accept threats of terrorist violence from Islamic extremists without comment? Have you ever read the f*cking Sun newspaper...?

And James - sounds good, I could murder an Indian.

Listen you misogynistic fool, it is her story which is all over the papers and apparently on TV too. Why should she have to defend herself? It is a harmless article of clothing. An intelligent person on Heartland (not you) recently asked why the Muslim community wants to stay separate from everyone else - this veil hoopla could easily alienate the Muslim women - which is not a good idea as they are probably the biggest advocates for reform in this population.

Please retitle this topic - What good is this doing?

People are getting mighty hot under the collar on these topics. Are you deliberately setting out to polarize Heartland?

No James, people will choose to be rude on their own accord. I don't make anyone do or say anything.

Hearts for you James - because of your good-hearted nature.

She was suspended because she was wearing something which prevented her from doing her job properly and she refused to comply when her employer told her not to wear it. It's got nothing to do with misogyny, religion, or terrorism. It's simply employment law.

From the 4th post in this thread:
Motz wrote:Or, if we go for the non-conspiratorial approach and actually report the facts as they are, it might possibly be because they've had complaints that the children's inability to see her mouth means that they can't copy her lip movements which is a tad problematic when you're learning English as a Foreign Language at primary age.
and from http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/bradford/6066726.stm
The BBC wrote:Kirklees Council said the decision was taken after a monitoring period in which the impact of wearing the veil on the teaching and learning was studied.

It said: "In this case the school and local authority had to balance the rights of the children to receive the best quality education possible and Mrs Azmi's desire to express her cultural beliefs by wearing a veil in class.

"The education of the children is of paramount importance and it is disappointing that the school was unable to reach a compromise with Mrs Azmi in this case."

Why DO they put peas in curry these days? Isn't that a daft thing to do? Whoever heard of a curry with bloody peas in it anyway?

I'll have a chicken curry, please. Medium-hot, plenty of peppers, light on the onion, no peas.
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.

mh, have you not heard their techno-mix of Combine Harvester? It brings the old family favourite right up to date. Ask Claire.
There's a techno mix? Shudder. Bloody world's gone daft.

Amen Brother! and why do all the major supermarkets put peas in their fried rice, I've never dined at a Chinese restaraunt that considered them an essential part of the experience?

"She said she was happy to remove the veil for children and only insisted on wearing it while in the presence of male colleagues; no child had ever complained about her wearing it."

I still call it s**t - Muslim women deal with enough crap without having to put up Westerners telling them what to wear.

Western men have to deal with enough crap without having Muslim women insinuating that if they see their face the only thing that they'll be able to think of is f**king them. Sounds like gender discrimination and sexual harassment to me.

Maybe you are right, but I am for veils on the UGLY ones. :innocent:

Oh yeah, and that back up beeping thing that they put on trucks.
I'm also in favor of putting them on fat women so they don't crush small children.... :D

Motz - It's a piece of clothing. If we take away their choices then we can't build a relationship with them. And personally, I believe it is the women who are going to be the biggest moving force in the reform of that religion - especially the Muslim women who live in the west.

She did wear it in the classroom - the school didn't mind her wearing it outside of the classroom:
The BBC wrote:Bilingual support worker Aishah Azmi, 24, was asked to remove the veil after pupils found it hard to understand her during English language lessons.
Headfield Church of England Junior School, in Dewsbury, said she could wear the veil outside the classroom.
(source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/bradford/6046992.stm)
Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik wrote:I fully support the decision of the education authority and the school in requesting the classroom assistant remove her veil when teaching primary school children.
(ibid)

And the children did complain:
Kirklees Council's children's services spokesman, Jim Dodds wrote:Both pupils and teachers raised concerns because they were finding it difficult to make out what she was saying during lessons.
(ibid)

A piece of clothing which they only have the "right" to wear because of their religious belief that all men are skirt chasers.

Spin it how you want, if a woman felt the need to wear a veil around me in my place of work, I'd file a complaint, since the act of wearing it is an unfounded and slanderous judgement of character.

Which is all getting off the point that it was stopping her from doing her job. She wouldn't work in a butcher's shop, so why work somewhere where facial expressions are an instrumental part of her job?
