Personally I'm against the death sentence in general.
Anyhoo, I don't think the "allies" ever expected to capture Saddam alive (assuming it is Saddam, and not one of his body-doubles) and so were never expecting to face this particular dilemma:
Option a: Kill Saddam and turn him into a martyr.
Option b: Keep Saddam alive and turn him into a rallying point for the anti-western forces.
Neither sounds great does it?
