Opeth?

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

Anyway never heard anything by Opeth so I really havn't a clue. But it sounds like they could well be rubbish. And they look like spooky kid corperate goth to me.
Clean vocals as in proper singing, death as in death metal vocals

"Spooky kid corporate goth" - er no

I'm sorry to hear all those people that won't give them a try, you really are missing out! I'm quite happy to copy some stuff!

You're Thor?I've haven't had a pith for a week.
So Thor comes down to earth to see what's happening in the world of men. He goes to an inn where he spies a comely young wench. They go up to a room together, and he spends the night showing her how it's done in Valhalla.

The next morning, after having had such a good time, he decides to tell her who he really is.

"Young wench", he says, "I am Thor!"

"Tho am I", she replies, "but I'm thathithfied."

I've often felt I SHOULD give them a go... I love prog, and I love folk.... it's just the "death metal" bit that puts me off. Not that I'm adverse to heavy stuff; even the odd "warrrrgggghhhhhhh" in the right place, and used sparingly, can be quite good... but all the time just leaves me cold.

The thing is, I'm not really a metal fan. Apart from Tool, if you can call them metal... so should I give Opeth a go then? I've heard a lot of other Tool fans recommend them.

For the uninitiated: think a jazzy Pink Floyd meets Morbid Angel.

They're also probably the single most un-pretentious "prog metal" band on the planet. Despite the genre, it's classy and tasteful stuff, and they're a down-to-Earth bunch, not wankers.

If you're entirely turned off by metal, then Damnation is the album to check out. Melancholy, jazz-influenced rock with barely a distorted guitar to be heard, and nothing resembling metal.

I've found there's quite a bit of overlap among fans of Tool, Opeth, and Isis.

The most recent albums, Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Damnation, and Ghost Reveries are my favorites. Oh, and the drummer is phenominal, easily my favorite metal drummer. He doesn't just play 16ths on the kicks throughout every song, imagine that! 8)

Given your reaction, I'd strongly suggest you'd avoid them, yes.

a confession:
I adore The Pink Floyd, AB*
Jazz and I have an hit 'n' miss relationship
Prog Rock died when Gabriel made the right choice
Napalm Death, Megadeth, Nuclear Assault, Entombed Image
everything else (especially Death, Morbid Angel, Obituary and Deicide) is just pish. IMO

*AB - After Barret

Syd on his own is fine, just not with The Pink Floyd

Well that's the thing; I've heard that there a quite a few strings to Opeth's bow, and I've just not had the time to investigate them yet. I've got voles to write about for a start, and then there's the matter of the upcoming Tool tour (woooooooooooooooo!!!!!!)
