Clean vocals as in proper singing, death as in death metal vocalswild bill buttock wrote:I read some-ones review of an Opeth album on another forum.First of all I assumed it was a mis-spelling of Opus("Live is life").Realising I was wrong I read on and it kept referring to the vocals as being both Clean and death.I mean WTF?Do they mean by clean that they don't say f**k or bugger?By Death vocals do they mean Deaf as in the same way Morrisey and that bird with the long head out of M-people sound like Jack Ashley?
Anyway never heard anything by Opeth so I really havn't a clue. But it sounds like they could well be rubbish. And they look like spooky kid corperate goth to me.
"Spooky kid corporate goth" - er no
I'm sorry to hear all those people that won't give them a try, you really are missing out! I'm quite happy to copy some stuff!
So Thor comes down to earth to see what's happening in the world of men. He goes to an inn where he spies a comely young wench. They go up to a room together, and he spends the night showing her how it's done in Valhalla.wild bill buttock wrote:James Blast wrote:Opeth - sounds like someone with a lisp saying "Oh pish!"
my case rests
You're Thor?I've haven't had a pith for a week.
The next morning, after having had such a good time, he decides to tell her who he really is.
"Young wench", he says, "I am Thor!"
"Tho am I", she replies, "but I'm thathithfied."
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.

Hmm, I may take you up on that. My brother keeps mentioning them but I've never given them a listen...Brideoffrankenstein wrote:I'm sorry to hear all those people that won't give them a try, you really are missing out! I'm quite happy to copy some stuff!

I've often felt I SHOULD give them a go... I love prog, and I love folk.... it's just the "death metal" bit that puts me off. Not that I'm adverse to heavy stuff; even the odd "warrrrgggghhhhhhh" in the right place, and used sparingly, can be quite good... but all the time just leaves me cold.
The thing is, I'm not really a metal fan. Apart from Tool, if you can call them metal... so should I give Opeth a go then? I've heard a lot of other Tool fans recommend them.

why not "give them a go" and then....see if you like them? and if you don't...then don't give them another go.
For the uninitiated: think a jazzy Pink Floyd meets Morbid Angel.
They're also probably the single most un-pretentious "prog metal" band on the planet. Despite the genre, it's classy and tasteful stuff, and they're a down-to-Earth bunch, not wankers.
If you're entirely turned off by metal, then Damnation is the album to check out. Melancholy, jazz-influenced rock with barely a distorted guitar to be heard, and nothing resembling metal.
I've found there's quite a bit of overlap among fans of Tool, Opeth, and Isis.
The most recent albums, Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Damnation, and Ghost Reveries are my favorites. Oh, and the drummer is phenominal, easily my favorite metal drummer. He doesn't just play 16ths on the kicks throughout every song, imagine that!

Being brave is coming home at 2am half drunk, smelling of perfume, climbing into bed, slapping the wife on the arse and saying,"right fatty, you're next!!"
Given your reaction, I'd strongly suggest you'd avoid them, yes.wild bill buttock wrote:

a confession:
I adore The Pink Floyd, AB*
Jazz and I have an hit 'n' miss relationship
Prog Rock died when Gabriel made the right choice
Napalm Death, Megadeth, Nuclear Assault, Entombed
everything else (especially Death, Morbid Angel, Obituary and Deicide) is just pish. IMO
*AB - After Barret
Syd on his own is fine, just not with The Pink Floyd

Well that's the thing; I've heard that there a quite a few strings to Opeth's bow, and I've just not had the time to investigate them yet. I've got voles to write about for a start, and then there's the matter of the upcoming Tool tour (woooooooooooooooo!!!!!!)Rafster wrote:
