Having spent the better part of three weeks in Bahrain, I have to confess there are things that still make little or no sense. How can a country hold a so-called democratic election that places the opposition party in power but retain the same prime minister? Strange but true, as he appears to have been in the job for over two decades and is the wealthiest man on the island on account of the fact that he controls the oil revenues. I just hope Blair doesn’t get any ideas.

Also read an interesting article in the press about a new car sales room in Saudi Arabia staffed solely by women to serve women. It might sound reasonable enough in a Muslim country until you learn that although Saudi women are allowed to buy/own a car they are not allowed to drive one! Come look at the cars, talk about them, get advice, but you’ve no chance of a test drive!

Other weirdness includes the construction of a World Trade Centre. Any one else find the building of knew set of twin towers in the Persian Gulf somehow ironic?

It’s also become clear that the War On Terror will not be won by bullets, bombs and young soldiers bleeding their last in some foreign field. It will be by a process of assimilation, judging by the huge American style malls: M&S, Debenhams, Radio Shack and a Big Mac.

Most unlikely named burger chain? “Fuddruckers�.

Then there was a shop named “Fatima Bint something or other…�

Well it's not a country.

It was the families that joined their lands together to create UAE.

But yeah, I've had job offers from Dubai offering crazy bucks but somehow I just can't bite.

Still no alcohol there except for the tourist centres/areas right ?

Read the car thing in the newspapers as well, but I believe women are/will be allowed to vote? Heard some explanation along the lines of "it's good for them to decide where the country heads to, but for their own safety we'll keep them off the roads". For their own safety, yeah right! :lol:

It has to be said that Bahrain is more liberal than most of its neighbours. Alcohol is freely available except during Ramadan, as demonstrated by the amount of Saudias (or however that's meant to be spelled) who drive over the causeway to get drunk at the weekends. I guess their faith only applies on their native soil.

Then there is the whole issue of Indian migrant labourers. Wages and working conditions are far from civilised. Its unpleasant but you have to remind yourself that you're not in your own country.

@ James - haven't quite escaped yet, my flight is half ten on Friday night. :)
