macbook pro & cubase?

anyone here ever used a macbook pro to run cubase?

if so:
  • what version of cubase did you use?
  • how did it perform?
  • whats the built-in mbp soundcard like?
  • would getting a firewire or usb2 external audio interface (eg: M-Audio MobilePre USB) be better?
  • is it any good for VST instruments
toying with the idea of getting a 15" (got at 19" flatpanel at home anyway) 2.16ghz macbook pro (with 1gb of ram, and then sticking in another 1gb myself)

however, a couple of people i work with can get them heavily discounted... one through a "higher education" scheme :lol: and one through some company-affiliate tax dodge ;) :lol:

they can get anything upwards of £300 off that price :innocent:

It will work perfectly, but I'd opt for another soundcard than the standard one.

USB is not bad, but I know from a lot of semi-pro and pro musicians/homerecorders that USB tends to have...issues (disconnects, high latency all of a sudden, freezes etc etc)

Whereas Firewire is faster and has less issues, except the fact you have to turn it on FIRST before you turn on you mac (so no 'hotplugging/wiring')

When thinking about M-Audio, I am still very happy with my Audiophile FireWire soundcard, which is not too expensive either... And seeing what you had in mind (the USB thingy), the one I propose is no 'overkill' for you. Mind, it uses RCA connections, no Jack connections.

But there are solutions for that (adaptors, or small mixing desk between the soundcard and the Mac, which only has to cost 60-80 extra pounds... )

And to start with, if you are mainly using VSTs and MIDI, you are safe with the 1 gig memory. I work on a 2.8 Dell dualcore with 1 gig for my FGG stuff, and it doesn't stir for a second...

And I use Nuendo 2.0 and Cubase SX3, if you are thinking about Cubase tho, 'obtain' the new SX4... it is way more interesting for you VST freaks ;D
