Golden oldies from the past - such as The Beatles - could take the Top 40 by storm as the pop music singles chart is revamped. Under new chart rules which came into force this week, any song available as an internet download is eligible for the chart regardless of when it was released. Previously, songs could only be included if a physical copy of the single was also available in the shops.
So Snow Patrol's Chasing Cars - released back in July - is set to feature in this week's top 10.
Until
now, songs were automatically removed from the chart two weeks after the physical copy of the single was deleted.
The rule change means songs which appear in adverts or on film soundtracks are likely to make a comeback.
"Under the new rules, anything and everything is eligible," said HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo.
"The charts will now offer a much broader representation of the nation's music tastes."
EMI is rumoured to be negotiating to release the Beatles' back catalogue as downloads for the first time.
Mr Castaldo said: "If the Beatles' songs were made available digitally, there would be such a rush to download them that a top 10 made up entirely of their music would be almost guaranteed."

you'd think that everyone who wanted to hear the Beatles by now would have, I don't get it

wasn't it time anyway to adjust Chart rules to the market?
this sounds hopelessly outdated.Until now, songs were automatically removed from the chart two weeks after the physical copy of the single was deleted.

When will we see the "new look" chart come into action? this week?
And even though I'm not a fan of the Beatles, I think anything would be better than that Leona cow.

Good point Ms. E, but I think we all got a frisson from saying "Ooh look, The Sisters Of Mercy are at no.2 with Temple of Love 92" and when they topped previous incarnations of the Indie Charts in NME and Snouds back in the 80s.
It's nice to be on the winning side, now and again.

Pointed stick? Oh, oh, oh. We want to learn how to defend ourselves against pointed sticks, do we?
Getting all high and mighty, eh? Fresh fruit not good enough for you eh?
Well I'll tell you something my lad! When you're walking home tonight and some great homicidal maniac comes after you with a bunch of loganberries, don't come crying to me!
I agree, though having never been on the winning side of anything I have grown to love the non-winning side - the 'alternative' side. It makes me feel alive not be part of the herd.James Blast wrote:Good point Ms. E, but I think we all got a frisson from saying "Ooh look, The Sisters Of Mercy are at no.2 with Temple of Love 92" and when they topped previous incarnations of the Indie Charts in NME and Snouds back in the 80s.

But how can they know every track that is available for download? Will they only be using the data from certain sites?
