80 s new wave bands

Please recommend new wave bands from your country from the 80 s

Bands that were reasonble known in your country but never got outside their country

and are worth investigating

for example for Holland i only know Mecano

from Belgium only Tc matic

any name and info is more than welcome

TC Matic was never considered a New Wave band over here. And while Front 242 started the whole EBM thing, they were lumped in with New Wave back in the '80's in some circles. But then, so were The Smiths, Anne Clark, The Cure, Birthday Party (and consequently Nick Cave) and a whole lot of other bands. And in the USA, New Wave meant a whole different thing. Blondie was considered New Wave there, and bands like Flock of Seagulls and even The Cars. As far as I know, Mecano was a Spanish band who had one hit in the late '80's called 'Hijo De La Luna', which had nothing to do with New Wave, but there could as well have been a Dutch band by the same name.
Belgian bands from around that time that are worthwile listening to and might just fall into that category are The Neon Judgement, Arbeid Adelt, 2 Belgen, De Brassers, Aroma Di Amore, The Employees (although they had more of a ska vibe), Lavvi Ebbel, The Misters, Nacht Und Nebel, Poesie Noire, the old incarnation of The Scabs (Matchbox Car, Is This Life and No Pay Today are classics!) and a whole lot of others I can't come up with now, because I'm at work and have no access to my CD's for reference

. The 80's were a really fertile ground for Belgian bands...

Jad Wio's first album is quite okay in a S/M-batcave kinda way.

Etienne Daho is very talented, but more pop than actually new wave.

You may also have heard of Indochine, which are insanely popular here and quite famous in Belgium, but Gawd I can't stand them !

There's also Rita Mitsouko (band, not solo act), but I really don't get their "mock rock". And some others (Elli & Jacno, Taxi Girl...), most of which are just forgettable.

The alternative punk-rock scene was more vivid IMO : BÃ©rurier Noir, Parabellum, Les Sheriff, Mano Negra, GarÃ§ons Bouchers, Oberkampf... Some of them were okay. I especially like Les Sheriff and their "Ramones Ã la franÃ§aise" flavour.

Not a huge fan of French pop/rock music actually.

I agree with good Belgian bands. Most of them were more related to the so called cold-wave more than new-wave.

Other bands rather unkown but with very good singles on that time: Aimless Device, Danny Wilson, Diesel, Flesh for lulu, Hard rain, Icehouse, Jayhawks, Little Nemo, Pink Turns Blue, Radio Heart, Sad Lovers and Giants, Sally timms,
Sniff'n'the Tears, The bolshoi, The essence, The Fair Sex, Troy Tate .......

In addition, Mecano was a new wave band before "Hijo de la Luna".

Sally was born in Leeds, England. She grew up in the Yorkshire dales, sang in the church choir and performed in poetry recitals as a child. In 1985 she joined the Mekons as a full-time member and has regretted it ever since. Unfortunately, the only way out of the Mekons is in a box, so she's still there.

saw her at the duchess of york in leeds about 7 years ago with jon langford (also of the mekons, the 3 johns, and early sisters friend/producer) & the waco brothers for a c&w gig

As for the Freur - Underworld connection:

Freur consisted of Carl Hyde, Rick Smith and Alf Thomas.
Later on, these three founded Underworld with a fourth member (can't remember the name), but Underworld then had not that much success. That was late 80s, begin 90s. Underworld went dead again. Then, afterwards, Underworld was re-animated (Underworld 2) with only two members left, Hyde and Smith.

I was kind of a fan in those days

English New Wave?

Well, I'd consider the post punk wave of 80's pop to be some excellent New Wave.

Have a listen to early Human League, its excellent stuff. From 'Reproduction' to 'Dare'.
You'll also want to listen to Soft Cell, but beyond just Tainted Love.
I am currently listening to Visage, New Wave synth at its finest, a glammy mix of New Romantic and 80's electropop.

Aye, Karl ended up joining madonna's backing band and toured the world before ending up as a session musician in LA, came back to the UK, and found Rick working with some kid called Darren Emerson

and released a few techno tunes "Minneapolis", "Dirty" and "Big Mouth" as 'Lemon Interrupt', then they changed the name to 'Underworld' and recorded "Mmm, Skyscraper I love you...." and mark 2 was born, but now existing as mark 3 as Emerson went off to run his own label and be a superstar DJ

i would never have considered the bolshoi as new wave -though they were great for such a shortlived band on the goth/alternative scene, especially live.
