Claytown Troupe are, I think, still going to a degree... I think they played Whitby Goth fest a year or so ago (or at least, some goth fest last year?)

First time I saw them was supporting Salvation in Fulham Greyhound, late 88/early 89? They were pretty good then, was quite impressed with them - once they got signed, I think they became a little more "metally rock". Certainly, after their first album, they more or less turned into Pearl Jam. Not that that's the worst crime in the world; it just wasn't the more Play Dead influenced stuff that they started playing.

But (as I've probably said before here).... the Lorries.

Played at least 2 of the 10 best ever gigs I've seen.

The Christian Death gigs were NOT fun; CD were... NOT TO MY TASTE (there, that was diplomatic wasn't it); the Lorries had just lost their drummer (Chris Oldroyd, who did indeed play standing up, alongside their drum machine - twas a MIGHTY racket!) and had to carry on with aforementioned drum machine by itself.

BUT... London ULU in 89; the Marquee in December 88; by the gods, the intensity of their sound was unparalled. Kinda a cross between Swans, Sissies and Big Black, in hindsight?

Cut Down; THAT bassline...

Open Up: A furious, unrelenting, pummeling mindfuck of a song;

Chance: As above, only more so. A LOT more so.

Bought a few CD's of theirs recently; and Chance STILL sounds like the world is about to end.

Can you tell I'm a fan yet?!

It was the 12.11.88 that ver Troupe supported Salvation at the Greyhound.
In an outrageous display of interband co-operation and mutually warm liaison, ver (Bristol based)Troupe supported Salvation at the Thekla in Brisil . Thus ensuring that there would be more than the proverbial one man, dog , crazy exes ,and diehard kitbaggers.
In return Salvation banged them on the bill , so to speak, at the Greyhound. At which point they sneaked up on the inside, grabbed a deal with Island and journeyed to the stratosphere and good luck to them!
Meanwhile Salvation stopped on the way back to Leeds at Scratchwood services and did comence battle with ye great Rats that did live in those environs at that mystical time.........I leave you to conclude who emerged victorious from that grand liaison

RLYL did indeed tour with Xmal twice.
I caught both Leadmill shows in 1984. At the time the Lorries were just sheer noise & to be honest not very good live. A couple of years later & they were fantastic.

Anja Huwe is now an artist/photographer. She was actually in Leeds for an exhibition a year or so ago.

I also remember that they had bad attitudes and we all thought they were a set of flouncy cu nts. Who was it that stayed at the singers house & said it was plastered with pictures of Ian Astbury.

Who are THE Killing Joke?
Didn't mind the first Claytown album. It had Danse Societyesque keyboards and thumpy drums. It was very early 80s sounding.
Unfortunately the second album was American rock dirge.
I taped Claytown as well as Salvation at the Bristol Thekla gig, both good recordings. From the merchandise table if I remember.

Thanks for the offer - got one already though flying around somewhere! Haven't listened to it in years, will have to dig it out. Also have got a rather splendid VHS of the same gig somewhere. (goes off to rummage through boxes!)

Well ,since you ask .........Yesterday Aimee fell over and headbutted one of those silver balls outside the Winter gardens and now looks like Sylvester Stallone. Kate got blown over by the wind as she rushed to help her and has also inexplicably left a giant plastic grasshopper in my bag , which I've just found as it impaled my left hand.
