emo vs. goth

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

The first time I heard about "emo", I understood "haemo", as in "haemoglobin" (they sound exactly the same in French). :oops: :lol:

It probably would have been much more fun, haemo-core, haemo-metal... :twisted:

I can't understand how in these bands some of the people are 30 ish and they write songs that 15 year olds can relate to. Surely the 30 ish year old band members need to grow up and get some adult problems!

I'd say I was pretty close, hardcore subgenre, imploded in on itself and became what some bands think goth is today, the backdrop to a slightly pathetic fashion show.
Nationalise the f**king lot.

When did UK DECAY, Bauhaus, Siouxsie Banshees, Joy Division (the bands that kicked off the Goth sound & image IMO) become "Hardcore"? :urff:

um....dude, emo never even came close to that lot.

There was more to post punk than just the goths, even though we are by far the best looking.

I like to think of punk as a paint grenade, each genre a different colour. JD, Siouxsie etc kicked off goth. The Human League, Ultravox etc kicked off synth pop and new pop. Throbbing Gristle, Caberet Voltaire kicked off Industrial...

Hardcore was just one thing that came out of punk, thats where emo came from.

Goth and Emo never touched, they just get confused because emos nicked some asthetics from younger goths. (Black hair, andrgonous tendancies etc)
Nationalise the f**king lot.

So, I think its fair to say Emo came from hardcore which came from punk. Goth came from Dark Post-Punk bands, which came from punk.

Different, linked, but I wouldn't wish to be seen associating the 2.

Origonal desciption of Emo still stands.
Nationalise the f**king lot.

Anyway, these things are generally genre-ized at least partially in retrospect. At the time they're actually happening, those involved or around them have better things to be thinking about, and are likely never even conscious of forming or belonging to any particular genre. To them it's just "good rock music" or "groovy pop music" or whatever.

Take Baggy as an example. By the time it came to be called "Baggy" and was fully analysed and pigeon-holed by the media, the Roses had come and gone (to make the 2nd LP), the Mondays had come and gone (to do whatever it was they did in their spare time - I don't think I really want to know), the Charlatans had risen, and the third wave of bands (the "we always had a dance element in our music" crew) had arrived.
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.

I think his description of emo's origins was pretty good. He's not saying there was any meeting of hardcore and goth, apart from way back in the mists of early punk. In much the same way as a million genres which are now opposed in many aspects can all trace their roots back to the American South some time in the 1930's!

And while early hardcore may have been... well, hardcore - there is no limit to the packaging, watering down and warping of any original message that popular culture is capable of. We should all know that by now! :wink:
