I would have recommended Bill Hicks and George Carlin, but you already knew of Hicks and someone beat me to naming Carlin.
Not a conventional 'comedian', but I recommend picking up spoken word performances by William S. Burroughs, especially the ones about the egregious Dr. Benway.

Blaster Bates is always a bit of a laugh - who knew that blowing stuff up was a source of such amusement..?
If you like Bill Hicks then you'll probably like Lenny Bruce.

Bill Hicks is great but a little bit slow.
Been listening to Carlin the past couple of years ... over and over again ... still extremely funny ...
And then there's ...
Tim Allen, a little bit harder to find ...
and last but not least (as Izzy already mentioned) Henry Rollins - spoken word
Went to see a show last year in Antwerp, duration : 3,5 hours, never, not for one second, got bored.
This guy just tells you about the things in life he recently encountered. All of this really happened and boy can this man tell a story
I added an example on my webspace www.eenfeestje.be/brazil.mp3
(Please ignore the website as it is under construction)
Have fun

If you want good stand -up you have to go Stateside!! Let's roll..the obvious, Hicks was mentioned but here's some more for you to look up and down load!!
Rodney Dangerfield
Sam Kinison
Dave Attell
Greg Fitzsimmons
Greg Giraldo
Robert Schimmel
Artie Lange
Colin Quinn
Brian Reagan
Dennis Leary
Never ever ever listen to Andrew Dice Clay..the man is funny as cancer!
If you want good old fashioned machine gun one lines ..try Jackie Martling ( jackie the joke man - who used to be on Howard Stern's radio show)
If you get the chance, tune into Sirius Satellite radio and listen to Raw Dog - one of their comedy channels - Radio as it should be !

I've just recently seen some stuff by Demetri Martin. Worth a look IMO.

Richard Prior. RIP.
This is a serious recommendation... Jimmy Carr.
On stage he's totally different from the squeeky clean(ish) "grandma's favourite UK TV funnyman" image.
On stage he's a sick twisted hilarious monster.
