Gothic rock-20 years on

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

Yep 20 years since Gothic rock's golden age(you know, when some records got in the chart).
So what song would you think is the one that gets most airtime on the radio and the tele?
I'll tell you what I think it is All about eve-Martha's harbour.
If you mention gothic rock to the average man in the street, will he recall the Wagnerian majesty of Floodland era Sisters of mercy?NO.Will he recall the brooding intensity of Fields of the Nephilim?DOUBTFUL.Will he recall the romantisism of The MI*sion?unlikely
But ask him if he remembers that hippy bird making a pigs-ear of miming on Top of the pops and he'll know straight away what your talking about.

Goth? Everyone knows about Goth. Cradle of Filth, and them other screaming lot. Trust me, I knew a goth at school, he was into all that stuff.

But seriously, its gonna have to be...Joy Devision, Love will tear us apart. They may not have started out goth, but that song takes the biscuit AND everyone knows it.
Nationalise the f**king lot.

It's always the same. When the 80s psychedelic revival gets dissected, there's always far more focus on the clownish antics of the baggy crew than there is on the dark majesty of Spacemen 3 and Loop.

If the public face of goff is gonna be mocked, it may as well be "Martha's Harbour" that gets the mocking. For once though I'd love to see some real historical justice being done, and UK Decay getting the credit they deserve.

It's great, isn't it? "Torched" is like being mugged by guitars. All their LPs are pretty good, in fact.

I believe Mr. Blast may have been known to partake from time to time also.

When I think back to "those days" I tend to think of Temple of Love blaring out at Pews in Shrewsbury, "She Sells Sanctuary (Howling Mix)" causing much flinging of arms and flying of drinks, Animal Magnet's "Welcome To The Monkey House" sending the place loopy. I also recall a friend of mine taking to wearing a cape and another taking on the name "Drac" due to his atire and the fact he had a pet rat called "Love Glove" which travelled around in his jacket pocket.

The Goth (nee "Goff") of those days sometimes seems very removed from the things listed in the exact same genre now. The term is around still but I think it's mutated many times, and sometimes in pretty short periods.

To everybody else, I'm afraid that the TOTP does indeed come to mind. Generally, though, I think that many people would just think of black clothes, heavy make-up, scary hair a la Siouxsie and music that they didn't like.

Me ? Give me Spellbound, Temple, A Forest and a pair of unfeasably large boots and I really don't care what the world thinks or remembers....... :twisted: :wink:

But I guarantee you, if you sat everyone in the UK down and played them Martha's Harbour, then asked them what genre of music they thought it was, only the tiniest fraction of them would say goth, and almost all of them would be over 35.

In fact I think that goes for the majority of music we would deem to be "Goth Classics" :lol: Most people these days think gothic music sounds like Cradle of s**t/Manson... sad but true.

i have always found the whole thing dubious.
like saying "that rap music's s**t" without finding out the broad range of styles and genres it encompases...mind you :evil:

Goth seems to be the [life]style, the whole package and goth bands are mostly crap/paperthin because they don't have their own handle on the gothic (i am thinking of generic goff abnds such as Rossetta Stone and Rubicon) and the whole thing quickly degenerates into a brand of pop or rock.

Gothic music has an atmosphere and i'd like to think that AAE Martha's Harbour has it in spades. the flip side is that there are very few goth bands but lots that wear black and are played at goff-discos; i can entirely understand why AE says the Sisters are not a goth band.
Tony Wilson's 'gothic' comment spawned a lot of bands, some were goth some weren't but were seen by the media as part of that millieu.

Sadly i think that the words 'tower of strength' would spring to the lips of anyone old enough to remember, but not 'part of'...if you didn't just engender a blank look and a punch in the gob

Yep. Was listening to the one with trees on the cover for the first time in yonks only last week. Discovered them via the same source as I did the Sisters.

Loop I listened to the other week and didn't really get it. Was a surprise to me, as I'm a huge Spacemen 3 fan, and understand they were a fairly unashamed rip-off of them (for want of a better term!).

They are very different (with the possible exception of "Brittle Head Girl") - Loop are more like the Things Will Never Be The Same/Starship side of the Spacemen.
