As I have been traveling I have become used to having to download new music and tracks that I haven't uploaded onto my ipod before leaving my records behind. For this I have a paypal account to pay for the music, but I do know that there are sites I can go to to download for free. So I was wondering how many of you actually buy your downloads and who takes them for free.
This question is pure curiosity, I won't judge anyone on their answers.
Who pays for music?

So what conditions do you apply to your choice. Why pay or not?SINsister wrote:Both.

If I can find what I'm looking for on a pay site, I'll gladly pay. Often, though, I can't. I feel bad about taking stuff for free, but if that's the only way I can get a song I really want...meh.
And thanks!

My whole ethos with music is pretty set in stone (or, to put it another way, Carpy is very predictable at times)
1) Some artists I just buy straight away on cd or legal d/l
2) If I download stuff on p2p and I find I listen to it a lot I buy the real CD
3) If I download stuff on p2p and it's rubbish then I delete it.
Simple really - my p2p antics act as a quality control buffer.
This way my cd collection grows with decent stuff I know will get played and artists that make good music get money. Record labels or bands that trot out a heap of pony don't. Also, through using p2p to sample stuff I've found and got into some artists that I'd never have just walked into a shop and chanced on a cd for - that's as much due to the amount of dross released overall as anything.

...exactly.
In my case, I'm too poor to be able to buy every single thing I discover; also, some stuff just sucks, and I'm glad that I didn't shell out bucks I didn't have...

I do like the fact that I can get to listen before I buy, especially if it has been recommended to me by someone who's taste Im not convinced by. It beats judging a record by its cover.

I only download bootlegs, not official releases.
I usually buy music from independent record stores, where I can listen beforehand. That way I make sure I don't pay for crappy records.
And I get to make friends with people who know and care about music.
I'm fed up with major record stores. They all suck.

See I've never been a collector of bootlegs as I think it's robbing the artist of money. That's just my opinion Im not infering anythingBadlander wrote:I only download bootlegs, not official releases.

I can't remember the last time I went to a record shop.
I buy most of my stuff online & I'll only download freebies if they are one-offs or concerts (like here).
Ultimately, if I download something & I like it, I will hunt for the disc itself.

I never pay for a mp3, its just my own opinion but I like to hold something in my hands when I have bought it (I must be old fashion or something )
Every time I hear of something I like I will download it from the net and I’ll gladly pay money for a cd if it is worth it.
Otherwise I couldn’t fit in my room with all the unused records I had to buy and I wouldn’t own half of the good thing I have now simply because I wouldn’t have known them and I couldn’t get there albums in the local stores anyway.

I'm not exactly raking in the money, so unless it's an album I really, really, really want, I download it and give it a few listens. If it's below the bar, I delete it; if it's good but not really good, I keep it; if it's impossible to buy in the shops, I keep it; if it's just one particular track I like from some obscure band or band I generally don't like, I keep it; if it's an album I really like, I then go out and buy it.

Who said I bought bootlegs ?Arch Deviant wrote: See I've never been a collector of bootlegs as I think it's robbing the artist of money. That's just my opinion Im not infering anything
I used to, before the days of broadband connections, but I don't anymore, not with all the great stuff you can find on Dime.
As for "robbing the artist of money", I have to disagree. Who buys boots ? Only dedicated fans, who already have the official releases. It's never been "official release or boot" to me, it's "official release and boot".

i've a wealth of old music and there's no new music i want to listen to so i'm totally unconcerned by these kinds of problems. Which isn't to say i would not be if i did want to listen to some new music.
Basically i'm against supporting any "industry" that churns out consumer products and works on the basis of making money.

Sadly enough, I guess that's true in a lot of cases.sisterstekland wrote:i have read somewhere that if you if you pay 1€, the artist get only 0.01€.
so i won't pay for it.
OTOH, this is not the case with legal downloads. CD's cost a lot because much people are involved in the process of production, promotion and distro. And everyone wants a slice of the pie. Not in the least the tax company...
With legal DLs a lot of people are cut out and more money goes/could go/should go to the artist proper.

Ditto, although maybe I'm out on a limb here but is everybody's halo still intact ? The internet is overrun with music that nobody is paying for and its not all being downloaded by Romanian gypsies and crack addicts.Dark wrote:I don't pay for downloads.
If I want some official media based on what I've heard from downloads, I'll buy it if I like it.
