Biggest audience ever ?

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

Just curious : what's the biggest audience the Girls have ever played to ?
I'd say Reading, but how many people does that make ? And how big is Roskilde ?
As for indoor shows, could it be Wembley ? But iirc it wasn't quite a sold out gig.

I remember the Saturday night being sold out, the Monday night gig wasn't though.

Their official biography says:
"...Reading Festival. Another day, another thirty thousand people..."
http://www.thesistersofmercy.com/gen/biog.htm

Roskilde is bigger though, around 75.000 the latest years, but think it was actually bigger in terms of attendance in the early 90s.

For indoors I'm quite sure it's the Wembley.

Wembley was around 11K first night [sellout] around 7.5K second night.

NEC was around 8K

and Reading around 40K

I'm pretty sure the Reading capacity was way higher than 30k and Roskilde was in a tent so doesn't really compare.. Wembley definitely holds a lot more than the NEC, can't think of a bigger indoor gig :/

30K for reading was about right.

What about Palace for the Mode gig? More than Wembley?

Sure but for how many stages ? Were there other bands playing at the same time ? The Girls were headlining the festival, so probably none.
30k a day is already very big anyway.

Just checked Wikipedia. It says : "In 2005 the capacity of the Reading site was 66,500 and the Leeds site was 57,500. For the 2006 festival, capacities were increased at both sites with 80,000 at Reading and 70,000 at Leeds."

No idea how big it was in the early 90s though. :|

Edit : some more informations from Wikipedia :

"[Wembley] arena seats a maximum of 12,300 for concerts and although not the biggest of London's arenas (see for example Earls Court), it is regarded as having the best sound quality and the best backstage amenities for touring music acts."

Earls Court holds a huge 19,000.

In 91 there were 2 stages & a comedy tent (1st year I think) at Reading but it was essentially the same site as it is now...
Couldn't tell you exactly what the crowd was like for the Sissies cos I was quite happily squashed into the front row :)
If it's any indication the security took over 200 crowd surfers over the barrier during the Neds set (who were playing immediately before) and it was still heaving!

In '91 the Sisters played in LA to 6,000 capacity and then Orange County was added, outdoor ampitheatre with Gene Loves Jezebel + Danielle Dax, that was 17,000. Pales in comparison, I know, but not bad for the land of year-round sun.

How many at Hasselt 1992 (Pukkelpop)?
It seemed to be pretty crowded the but I have no idea at all how
many people were attending the gig. Anyone?
