broadband help needed.

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. i could have 8mb orange for £5 per month. or sky. will have a BT line.

i've not heard anything bad about Orange so it sounds good...check the details

Sky has the deal...Broadband/Phone/TV...check that out too..they offer up to 8 mb alowing for an upgraded BT line

Everybody at my workplace swears by Sky, throwing over Virgin after their well-publicized scrap. I'm with NTL, who're pissing useless, but I'm moving in a few weeks, so stuff it. Will be interested to see what others suggest...

Me ma n' da have Sky+ and couldn't live without it. And now have a BT Broadband line tae!

The streets cabled outside, but my dad kept telling ntl to sod off, even more so now they're virgin :lol:

Most ISP's who use a BT phone line are using BT equipment rented from BT.
There are a few exceptions , but these vary from area to area.Go for the cheapest you can find.The broadband service will be exactly the same .It's the support services and frills you will be paying extra for.If you have a problem it will be a BT engineer (now Openreach) who turns up.
The carphone warehouse offers a good deal (talk talk or Opal Telecom) but it is still the same pair of wires from the local BT exchange.
Remember they are only offering upto 8mb.There is no guarantee your line can support 8mb.My line is only 3/4 mile long and on a good night I can get 5 mb all other time it runs about 2mb.

The things to find out are:

1. Is there a cap on the amount of bandwidth you can use per day/month.

2. If it's running from a BT line (and as Pat says above, most ISPs who don't use cable go via your BT line) then find out how far away your exchange box is - if it's within a few hundred yards you're OK, otherwise your service will be crap.

I guess that's what I'm trying to scope out. I've been with AOL for years and in terms of speed, stability of service etc. I've had very few problems. But when there have been problems, their tech support is f**king useless - mostly variations on turn it off and back on again or un-install and re-install the software...

We've just moved from BT to Sky. £10 with unlimited downloads and £11 BT phone rental....it was £26 with BT.

BT customer services were totally crap and up to now Sky have been OK. (touch wood.)

A colleague has been waiting over a month for TalkTalk's cheap deal. They told him yesterday he'd have to wait another month. So he rang BT. More expensive, but they reckon he'll be up and running by the weekend. I'll let you know if he's still smiling on Monday.

I'm on Orange. On the whole they give a pretty stable and reliable service although we do get disconnected for an hour or so every so often - probably due to exceeding our download limit.

Other than that they're fast and good and all that.

I have stuck to BT, as said before in the end of the day it is a lot like any utility these days though - in this case it seems to be BT that deal with it whoever you choose though.

We have BT business broadband at work. Never any problems (apart from when the boss "forgets" to pay the bill :roll:)

At home we're still on dial-up :lol:

Weary after trailing around Morrisons Cambuslang, where kids (more later) and fat mothers were abroad, I was accosted on my way out by a nice man asking me about Sky/broadband etc. In a moment of 'I want to sit down and have a cold beer and a fag, just get me outta here'-ishness I said I was with Virgin, pished off with their prices and I wanted the Simpsons back. Yup, mug Blast! signed up there and then.

tell me I haven't done wrong, one of the nice men said it'd only be £34 a month compared to my last bill from Virgin which was £46, I can still cancel, right?

I tried to avoid this wee manchild on the way out, but he was careering around wildly and I didn't have the energy (by that point) to avoid him, other than shouting "Dude, watchit!". He went right into my (small, single personsize) trolley and banged his napper. His Maaaaaaaam! was nowhere in sight.
It cheered me up no end and sped me on my way to my decrepit motor then, off to the offy, chemist, home and here. :D

I have heard that Orange are shockingly bad. I'm considering moving to Sky myself, although a postcode check informs me I am outwith their network coverage so cannot have their super-dooper 16meg no cap £10 a month jobbie. Still, the deal they offer for £17 a month is 8meg with 40gb cap, which is most generous and I'm seriously considering it.

Been with Tiscali for a couple of years now and its been fab! Only ever had 1 problem, turns out you shouldnt try broadband via a 15 metre telephone extension line!
My boss on the other hand, was with talktalk and cutting a long story short they were totally SH!T! When it didn't work he'd ring the unhelp line somewhere in Kirkminisjalalalabladstan or some such, put on hold or through to loads of different people who were all fcuking useless and that was when their English WAS understood!
He had the last laugh though coz talktalk keep ringing us at work, 'Cold Calling' trying to get us to use them!
HMM, payback time! ROFLMFAO!!!
