PC Security other than Norton?

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

My PC went tits up about Three days ago  , I've just had everything set up again except Norton, I remember a tread a wee while ago saying it was a bit pish and slowed everything down, now's my chance to try something else, any suggestions, links ect would be very welcome.

My Norton subscription expired a few weeks ago. I dug back to an old thread here on HL and a few people had recommended AVG as much lighter on system resources, and free.

I uninstalled Norton, installed AVG and have had no problems since - plus it's cleared a fair amount of hard disk space (Norton was around 1.3 GB, which is pretty significant on a 20 GB laptop). AVG seems like a nice wee program - runs nicely in the background, runs a daily system scan etc.

Here at Casa da Rancho Relaxo I'm using Zone Alarm Pro Security Suite ( Anti hacking and Anti Virus ) AVG (Free Edition) and Adware Pro ( Anti Spyware)

All free off the net ( dishonestly of course) and so far no problems to speak of.

Avoid Norton, Mcafee and anything Microsoft recommends - they just pass all your info onto the NSA ( which they admitted too with Vista)

Happy surfin' kids.

Antivirus : AVG

Anti-spyware : Ad-Aware SE
And of course Firefox

All free and dead easy to use. f**k Norton and all Microsoft-recommended products. :von:

I'd say to use the free ZoneAlarm firewall and Firefox with it's AdBlock plugin.

Beyond that I'd just say to use separate firewall and anti-virus software, rather than one thing that does everything. To that end try and get an anti-virus that just that and as little else as possible.

A decent firewall, anti-virus and ad-blocking combination will see you well.

Also: SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are useful. A number of similar programs to clean the registry are recommended, but you need to know what you're doing.. oh, wait, sorry Scotty, forgot you're our tech support guy. :innocent:

Nah, seriously, go with what everyone's said. AVG, Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, ZoneAlarm, AdBlock FireFox plugin, SpywareGuard, SpywareBlaster, etc.
All free, all good.

Now people, there is nothing wrong with Norton.
It's the worlds largest antivirus company and there's a reason for that.

I don't like that overloaded norton stuff - other tools do the same job without taking as much cpu usage as norton. On the other hand, that freeware alternatives are - hard to believe - free of charge

btw:

I prefer a mix of AVG and Zonealarm, browsing with Mozilla (with at least Adblock Pro and Flashblock plug-ins).

More security wanted?

In the rough, I startet to scan my system regulary with ad-aware against spy- and adware, but now I prefer "Spybot - Search & Destroy".
