Dear Andrew - How to release a record

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

I think it would be verry sad if albums die out due to downloads. albums are importend to me because each one has a different theme and you can listen to the album as a whole, if the artists only release singles you won´t be able to do that anymore. :cry:

Not every album has a theme, you might even say that most of them sound like compilations rather than coherent albums. There'll always be albums, i.e. 40'-50' pieces of music, because there'll always be artists who think that it's the right medium for their visions.
But the format shouldn't be imposed just to suit the needs of the record industry.

Besides, there still are thousands of great records out there you probably still haven't listened to. So even if the album format did disappear, it wouldn't be so terrible.

I think it is sad as all the little odd ditties will die out that hide on albums but can nowhere to be considered Singles. It's a great artistic loss when all released songs are shaped after the Hit Singles formula.
For Floodland it would mean, no Flood I + II, no Driven like the snow, no Torch and no Colours. Just Mother Russia/Dominion, This Corrosion. Furthermore: no Intros, no Outros, no Hidden tracks etc either. :|
Put their heads on f*cking pikes in front of the venue for all I care.

Albums won't disappear because record industry, as it is, has little to do with it; they are not in a position to decide what disappears and whatnot. The record industry has for a long time been utterly irrelevant generally to people who actually like music.

Seems it's been pretty irrelevant to the life of Sisters, also.

Well said!
Look at vinyl - the record companies decided to kill it because CD is "better" (and they could charge £15 for a CD of a vinyl LP that was around a fiver). It worked for a while, but 20 years later vinyl is still with us. Thankfully.

To be fair, CD has never been "better" than vinyl.
Only the Hi-res formats come close (DVDA & SACD)
I don't mind the downloading scenario at all & maybe to categorise as "singles" is a little premature or sweeping.
I think whole album downloads are a great idea & even more enticing is the fact that it is more than possible that oddities & anomolies can be made available for download where not really readily available due to deletion or whatever.
As long as the consumer is given a choice of having a lossless download over a scabby old mp3 effort, then I'm all for it.
There is nothing to stop the artwork being a part of that download either, so effectively you end up with the same as you would have got from the shop, but just burnt onto a CDR.
I guess that would also mean the pressing plants wouldn't need to press so much & that would (i hope) have effects on reduction of energy usage, waste by-products etc.
The downloader would also have the option of how they wanted to store the media right?
No need to burn a disc if they don't want a disc.
All I see is a win win scenario & even better if the bands' websites host the downloads, as they don't need to pay so much to retailers etc. & so reap more royalties to plough into future projects.

That's my 2 penneth.
