White text on a dark background is much easier on the eyes than vice-versa (cuts out glare, etc.). Too bad books aren't printed this way - sadly, the ink costs would be astronomical, probably...

yes it would cost a lot more in ink but the eye does tire when reading and it tires faster when the text is white on black, it's also easier to scan lines when they are black on white

Ugh. Well maybe (*maybe?!*) I'm just wired differently than the rest of you lot, then. I prefer light text on a dark background, it's far more soothing and far less harsh than the reverse. And I went back and re-sampled all of the forum themes just now - CHRIST, my poor retinas! I can't stand yellow/gold/orange, so I'm sticking with my tried-and-true black and brushed-metal Industrial Groove Machine, thankyouverymuch!
