Tony Wilson - R.I.P

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

Along with John Peel, he was one of the most influential Men in British music :notworthy: :notworthy:

Feck me! never knew he was that bad.

'the flame that burns twice as bright, burns half as long'

we live lives of "quiet desperation', he didn't

Whilst maybe not directly as influential as John Peel on me and my musical life, he's got to be up there pretty darn close. Gutted. Another genuine man of his times goes and yet more vacuum is left behind.

A healthy :notworthy: yet an equal dose of :(

A rarity.
Tony was someone who had thought about what he wanted to say, and would then say it, do it, live it. A man who was never afraid to put his money where his mouth was, and a man guided by his principles no matter what s**t people threw at him.
I kind of think that we owe him, like we did with Peely, a real debt of gratitude. For many of us, life would have been different and a lot less interesting without what he brought to us.
Thanks, Tony.
Rest in peace.

I bet his last seconds were recorded and will be issued as a limited edition DVD with a FAC number in a Peter Saville box featuring extras for the first 7 buyers

not being flippant or in anyway disrespectful, I just think he would've wanted it this way, non?

As I posted on the Ghost Dance forum this morning, and on alt.gothic (neither of which attracted a responce, bar Dr Moody):
Korin wrote:Wow. The one to whom some have traced back the term "gothic music", the one who brought us some f**king great music (OK, and some less great music), and the one whose record label I admired to point that tried/will continue to try to emulate it with my own, has finally left us.
Absolutely gutted. It was only a month or two ago that people were discussing the NHS' refusal to fund his treatment, but at least he died peacefully.

RIP Tony, you'll be missed.

Korin
Until further notice, www.thorncult.tk will have a memorial to him on the front page, since I wished my label to be like his. Hell, I was even looking for details of F4 the other day to see if he was still signing...

Though I don't like them much, I've put on some Joy Division in honour of the good man.

Guess your dreams always end
They don't rise up just descend
But I don't care anymore
I've lost the will to want more
I'm not afraid not at all
I watch them all as they fall
But I remember when we were young
Those with habits of waste
Their sense of style and good taste
Of making sure you were right
Hey don't you know you were right?
I'm not afraid anymore
I keep my eyes on the door
But I remember
Tears of sadness for you
More upheaval for you
Reflects a moment in time
A special moment in time
Yeah, we are wasted our time
We didn't really have time
But we remember when we were young
And all of God's angels beware
And all you judges beware
Sons of chance, take good care
For all the people not there
I'm not afraid anymore (3) Oh, I'm not afraid anymore
Genuinely upset to hear about this. Yes - he could come across as a dickhead and yes he had some strange ideas. But without him I would never have had the music that provided a soundtrack for my teenage years. And is still massively important to me now.

May he rest in peace. :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:

A real kick in the stomach there. We've lost a visionary, and he was taken too soon.

Clear Skies, Tony.

"In the North-west it rains and it rains. And yet we managed to produce the industrial revolution, trade union movement, the Communist Manifesto and even the goddam computer. Down south, where the sun never sets, you took all our money and what did you produce? Chas and f**king Dave."

Ah yes, read that myself today. Really shocked by this one, I didn't realise he was ill. Seems he was unable to afford certain cancer drugs which could have been beneficial to him, due to living in Manchester, postcode lottery and all that  .
Nice repayment considering what he did for the city :|

Rest in peace.

What can you say about Anthony H that's not already been said? An essential part of the music I grew up to. As the man himself said about the music business, "some people make money and some make history". No-one seems interested in making anything other than money these days. He will be very much missed.
The fundamental cause of the trouble is that in the modern world the stupid are cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubt.
