Versions

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

I don't know how you guys listen to your Sisters music, but I usually make a few playlists on my Windows Media Player and listen to that.
Now I like to make lists that match albums or compilations, but recently I noticed I was getting a few things wrong. For instance I never knew Alice had a '93 remake.
So my question to you Heartlanders is; what different versions have there been of all the official songs released by :von:? I know that there are two versions of Alice, two of Body Electric, two of Lucretia My Reflection... but I'm not so sure about the rest.
So my question is: what version was released on which single/album/compilation and how many versions of that song were released officially? It doesn't matter whether the difference is rather small (like, Japanese Black Planet/ FALAA version), but I would rather like to be sure about, for instance, whether the 8:44 Lucretia my Reflection extended version was released on ASCOO or with the single...

Two version of Colours - one on Gift and one on the B side of TC.

I think the extended Lucretia on the single is even longer - nearer 10, if memory serves.
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.

It's a shame the Sisters Database site has gone as this would answer all these questions!

Lucretia had different length versions on the album, 7", 12" and the CD version if I remember correctly.

Looking at my MP3 list (as I don't have the vinyl here) we have :

Lucretia - Floodland 4:56
Lucretia - 7" 4:14
Lucretia CD - 9:51

Dr Jeep - Vision Thing 4:41
Dr Jeep - 7" 4:15
Dr Jeep (extended) - 12" 8:59

More - Vision Thing 8:22
More - CD 4:41
More (extended) - CD 8:31

More 1993 (radio edit) - CD 3:02
More 1993 (groove mix) - CD 10:54
More 1993 (power mix) - CD 10:53

I Was Wrong - Vision Thing 6:03
I Was Wrong - CD 3:12
I Was Wrong - CD 6:03

Temple Of Love - 7" 3:50
Temple Of Love (extended) - 12" 7:39

Temple Of Love 1992 - 7" 4:40
Temple Of Love 1992 - 12"/CD 8:07

That'll get you started

Generally extended. More and More 1993 are different.

Although I think that calling them extended may be wrong. Listening to some of them, I would be tempted to say that the longer versions were the originals and the shorter versions were edited out of them.

Examples of the top of my head :

Vision Thing (Canadian Club Mix) was the original and the album mix was a edited version.

The extended versions of both Temple Of Love were the original and the 7" mixes were edits.

If you want some new versions of old songs you need to look at the live stuff. Fix for example, was re-done for the live gigs in '92-93.

I Was Wrong (live 06) had different music to the original version.

Body Electric was a much slower version live in 98(?)

You'd be best off having a look through the Sisters Wiki http://www.sisterswiki.org/index.php/Main_Page and going through the Discography there.

The only major difference on the early stuff is that The Damage Done single is much "brighter" on the original vinyl. The Some Girls... versions have been played with. The rest of the songs sound the way they do on the original vinyl.

Same here Deadagain, could you tell me which of these are simply extended/shortened versions and which are truly different songs (like Alice '82 isn't like Alice '93)?

I'm just trying to find out whether I'm still missing any official releases, Ozzy. Thanks to your generous contribution, I think I have mp3 files of every official release so far, but I'm not sure anymore. I have at least 1 version of each official song, but after noticing the difference between Alice '93 and Alice '82 I'm unsure about whether I have all versions.

Maybe I should ask my question differently:
What version of which song was released on what single/album?
Like on SWGBM, Alice '93 and BO '82 are included, but not Alice '93 or BO '84.

It was re-released as the B-Side of Lucretia as Long Train. It was originally on the flexi 7" that came with the Walk Away single.

And on the FALAA reissue.

Speaking of which, there's also SKOS and SKOS (Early), which were completely different recordings.

I'm not sure if I'd give too much weight to slightly different running times - most likely caused by the track either being mastered at a different speed, or a fade out being slightly early (or late).

With the database gone, maybe we should look to recreating it on the wiki. I'm sure we have enough collective knowledge to do it.

In that case, I would suggest you get the following (or make sure you have) :

Some Girls...
The three albums (go for the 2006 versions as these have some of the B-sides on them)
Body And Soul single
Dominion single (CD)
Temple Of Love 1992 single
Under The Gun single
More 1993 single
(We Are The Same) Suzanne web single

This should get you every official version of the released songs. All the remaining ones are extended mixes or live tracks and can be found on the B-sides to some of the singles. If you have all of these then you can check the different versions between them.

The answer to your question can also be found by looking at the Sisters Wiki anyway and looking at the track listings.

AFAIK the track listing on Wiki only says the song name, not whether it's another version of the song or not. I knew Body Electric was released twice from SistersWiki, but it didn't note the second release was a new version

And the option you presented would cost me a lot of $$$- I'd spend some money on the Sisters, but not that much at once :innocent:

its what the version of Train is called on the flexi disc which came with initial copies of Walk Away 7"/12".

Long Train (1984) on the b-side of Lucreita singles is supposed to be the same, although some have slightly different timings and I've never compared them back to back.

whats BO? does that relate to Eldo's particular smell after touring in 82 and 84?

SGWBM: doesn't that say on it 'the sisters of mercy 1980 - 1983'? ie all the singles from 1980 to 1983; so Body Electric rerecorded 1984 version isn't on it, nor is 'Alice 1993' (ie rerecorded version in 1993).

SGWBM come out in 1992 month after 'ToL 1992 touched by the hand of Ofra Haza', so Alice 1993 wasn'r around then!

Ch**st, why did i get involved in this thread - I'm not gonna get any w**k done today, what a shame

Of all the versions of songs i mentioned above, I don't think there is much difference in most of them beyond the mastering & editing to make em shorter or longer to fit the particular release.

I didn't mention the TC Sprial Tribe remix, which is VERY different, but is unofficial, coming out c 2001 (and its reaconed not to be connected to THE Spiral Tribe AFAIK).

The rerecorded songs:

Body Electric in 1982 and 1984
Alice in 1982 and 1993
Tol in 1983 and 1992

Umm.. can't think of any more off the top of my head. Haven't compared the versions of Colours from TC single and Gift lp, but am pretty sure they are mixes of the same recording.
