Camden Town Market to be demolished?

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

According to http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2007/08/379805.html
For anyone who hasn't yet heard, an application for planning permission
has been approved by Camden County Council in order to demolish Camden
stables market and to build a new complex with high street chains like
Topshop and Starbucks.

Please click the link above, the page contains a petition to stop this from happening.

I can't believe they're planning on removing the market, it's one of London last alternative spots not to be taken over by the big corporate companies and it would be awful to see it go. :| :(

Fcuk NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

When I went down to see Neubauten in April, I set aside 3 days for it with the sole intention of spending the rest of the time there   . It's at least 50% of the reason why I want to move to London!

This cannot beeeeee!

Petition signed, not that I think it'll actually do anything as government these days is all about protecting and expanding corporate profit margins at the expense (pun intended) of the lesser traders.

And people wonder why I don't vote anymore.

Great, now I've got something else to be pissed off about. :x :x :x
I don't necessarily agree with everything I think.

London council have already killed Kennsington Market and Carnaby Street (by allowing a f**king Boots the Chemist to open)

What difference do you really think another government petition is going to make? I've signed countless petitions for much more important issues and they haven't paid a f**king blind bit of notice to it.

I'm afraid this is all too late anyway, as the plans and papers served have already been approved.

This is completely insane !
Why ruin a very fine place and turn it into something completely devoid of any real identity ?
To make more money, I know...
Do they real think people will keep on turning up in Camden once the fine shops are gone, just because of the name ? I won't. :von:

well for the fifteen seconds it took to sign the petition I would say its more constructive than barking at people on a sisters of mercy forum.

Well for your information, I signed this months ago, but I'm more of a realist, and considering that the very small quota of goths that want this over-priced, tourist trap saved, its a bit of a waste of time, especailly when the council are going ahead regardless.

Bark over :p

over-priced, tourist trap! - I´m pleased someone said it.

Hey I'm a realist too and I know what you mean about the seeming futility of protest in the face of government/corporate development makes us all angry goth or not, but everything decays anyway haha.
On a more positive note countercultural places like kensington camden hoxton etc always move about to newer areas once they spill over into something the developers want.

Is the Stables Market just the section in the green cages a bit further up the road from the Electric Ballroom or the bit up by the Lock?

I've never bought anything from there (used to look at the Sisters bootlegs before discovering the Weeding section :) ), but it would be shame to see it replaced by high street chains all the same. I think the first time I noticed the Starbucks on the High Street was the time I realised that Camden was changing.

I'll sign the petition as well, but I agree with DJ Nephilimbabe in that not only is it an overpriced tourist trap, but that if the papers have been signed there's no going back.

The Stables are the market at the back near the Proud art gallery. It means a large section of the market will disappear...

Whilst I think its a tourist trap I like the clothes they sell- beats yet another branch of Gap

Yes very sad worked on a stall opposite the market for a couple of years (under the canopy of the barbers shop) had plenty of celebs blag things, funniest being a very pissed Shane Magowan having just played a series of gigs at the T&C (i think) only wanting a copy of the gig that Joe Strummer didn't perform at!

Hope they're not too serious about that, petition is only for UK residents, sadly, otherwise I'd've signed

A bit short-sighted as it really does seem to attract foreign tourists. :?

Probably because we don't have any legal status when it comes to such matters?

Otherwise I could always have a dig in my address book and randomly pick the address of a HLer of choice

I do not believe the plan will come to anything. None the less, I have signed the petition, and will always show my support to the idenpendant trader by unloading my wallet in camden once a every month or so.

Because the petition is a government source, I sent an email around my contact list, I don't suppose you lot will do the same? Maybe send word on a few of the other goffik type forums? Best squash this thing when its still small.

I have submitted an enquirey to Camden council, and requested responce by post.

I will scan the letter when it is recieved.
From time to time I hear news of proposed redevelopment in the main Camden town area. Although I always sign the petitions and support the local business I do worry if that is enough.

My question, meant in all seriousness, is this:

What is the Camden councils official stance on preserving the heritage of Camden as the capital of England's (and possibly even the world's) liberal, bohemian and alternative cultures?

I hope and believe that Camden is protected from the influence of major chains by a benevolent council that appreciates its unique status, but I would appreciate confirmation of this, for myself and to show others.

Examples of places I would see protected rather than replaced include the main market, the hgih street, the Stables and Lock market, the Barfly, Electric Ballroom and the Underworld, the Devonshire Arms (and all other unique establishments)... to be honest the list is endless!

Camden will always be a very special place for me, and I truly hope that it will grow and flourish and remain as enchanting for generations to come. It would be a great reassurance to me that the local government shares this wish.

Regards and best wishes
