Female name song titles?!

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

I just came to the realization that Andrew has quite a few songs with female names in the titles...

Emma
Alice
Marianne
Jolene
Lucretia (My Reflection)
Suzanne (We Are The Same)

I thought it was interesting, that's all.

Am I missing any? I'm not too familiar with his newer (unrecorded) material.

And if you take the first letter of every song title (apart from Jolene) then it spells MALES which could be a symbol of the writers latent homosexuality.

That way or another, I think it's a nice thing for a rock band to have so many songs with female names, and in general - to have so many songs in which women play a vital role.
Not to mention that the roles they play are so much more distinctive and complicated than the roles women play in most other rock bands' songs. 8) :notworthy:

Stuff the J in the back, I'd say. Andy's passions unraveled!

Of course, during the 80s, Andy was desperately in love with SELMA JONES, aka SELMA J -- the notorious punkrocking bimbo with the superb hairdo and stiletto-sized fingernails!

That clearly explains the lyrics in 'home of the hit-men' !

psichonaut: Marianne is the german spelling for the name (and germans don't get to participate in this debate if it's not) and since it's about Hamburg, we must consider that :D Ergh.

Did Eldritch or Marx write the lyrics for "Red Skies Disappear"? That was where "Marianne" first appeared as a name. Marx said in a recent-ish interview that the process they used to write the songs around 1984/5 was that Marx or Hussey would write the music, make a rough demo (presumably with some self-penned lyrics to show the vocal line) then Eldritch would write the "real" lyrics for the music. Which kinda indicates that it was Marx who coined the name "Marianne".

And we should all remember that names were changed to protect the guilty anyway - names used in the songs are picked because they've got the right number of syllables or other such criteria.

Definetely Marx's lyrics. So you're right, that name was adopted by Marx though i'm not sure he used it to symbolize the city of Hamburg - i'd wager au contraire.
