now then, while i've been away it seems heartland has been using up a ridiculous amount of bandwidth - 4gb in the last 9 days alone :o

we're using up so much that i'm worried about the impact its having on the current servers, which have been kindly loaned to us by my friend at www.mawbray.com

the servers are ones he uses for his business, and i don't want our witterings to impact his business

so, i've purchased some new hosting from www.dreamhost.com (as recommended by rob from rhombus & wasteland :notworthy:) and will be moving heartland to their servers as soon as possible

what this means is that we're going to have a little downtime while people's DNS updates itself to point to the new servers - this could be anything up to a day or so depending on your ISPs. it will be different for each person i'm afraid.

anyway, what i'm planning is a 2 stage move, as follows:

1) upload copy of heartland to new webspace and point at the database on the existing heartland servers - done

2) update the dns to point to the new servers - i'm going to do this tomorrow (monday) evening

that will put is in a similar situation to how we were before the last big move, and should take the immediate pressure of the mawbray servers.

after that, i'll let it settle down for a week or so and they we will have to have another couple of hours downtime while i backup the database & move it to the new site.

once that's done we will be back up & running entirely on the new servers, which offer us an absurd amount of bandwidth per month, and which should hopefully mean no more moves for the foreseeable future :D

so, in summary, expect heartland to be down for anything up to 24 hours from tomorrow evening :!:

sorry about the short notice but its unavoidable i'm afraid :|

and if anyone wants to check, open up a command prompt and type

Code: Select all

ping myheartland.co.uk
you should see something like this:

Code: Select all

PING myheartland.co.uk (208.113.190.46): 56 data bytes
208.113.190.46 is the important bit. if you still see 64.38.12.10 you're still looking at the old site. hang on in their and it should just switch over seemlessly for you...
