The Dark Reign Of Gothic Rock

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

it's worth a read as it puts the whole goff thing into some kind of timeline... and you realise that the sisters where late comers to the party, and not actually as guilty as they seem.... more a case of "guilt by association" :von:

if you dont have it but have a bit of spare time, buy it. if you already have it, read it. its not bad 8)

I must say, the American cover is still quite funny - I like the look of it, myself.

i got the English version.
but maybe i even prefed the other cover... I mean particularly the Von's pic - he looks more contemporary, not some retro stuff.

I'm a big fan of old Sisters, also the very early.
But talking about their images through the ages - the only period when they looked a bit ridiculous was "The Wake" and around it.
I would say it was the only periood when Sis hadn't Von's face but Hussey's...
Well, to be true that pic on the English book cover isn't ridiculous at all, on the contrary - quite cool 8) but it remains me too much "The Wake" (which, of course, is also very cool 8) if we talk about music).

but i can be mistaken - maybe it was another Von's face which Hussey stole and turned to The m*****n's trademark...

Well, I finally got around to buying this, and read it at the weekend. I have to say, when I started it, I thought it was sh*te - the guy is by no means a good writer, and his argument about what constituted Goth - or Gothic - or Dark Rock - was frankly all over the place, and not at all convincing. However, the first chapter aside, it turned into a very interesting and entertaining history. Hell, I kept picking it up to see what Love and Rockets did next. So I enjoyed it a lot as a potted history of some interesting bands, and once I decided to ignore what is supposedly the central argument of the book! Thank you everyone for the recommendation. Now, are there any good books about the Cure?

I used to (vaguely) know a guy called Dave Thompson. Is there any "about the author" info in the book?

Here's what I have surmised. Don't trust any of it:
He used to work in a record shop around the late 70s, selling punk, perhaps in Leeds? He was on the scene, went to the early goth gigs? He now lives in America? He also wrote a book on Industrial music?

it was written about 13 years ago, but the period of the cure's history it DOES cover was quite entertaining... :)
