Location of the first gig: Alcuin or Vanbrugh?

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

Since I'm off to York Uni next week I've been twiddling my thumbs and doing some background reading. Anyway...

Quoth York Folklore:

"The Sisters of Mercy made their live debut in Alcuin dining room, on February 16th 1981. Their first ever gig kicks off with a twisted cover of Leonard Cohen's ``Teachers''."

Everything else I've read says it was Vanbrugh. Can anyone confirm or deny?

[As an aside, there are a few references to '-bat' in there. Haven't lurked on Dominion for long enough to ascertain if it's one and the same?]

Alcuin and Vanbrugh are separate colleges in York University.

One is within the other. That's what causes the confusion.

Odd, they're labelled on the campus map as being up on the hill (Alcuin) and down by the lake (Vanbrugh) with the Market Square and Library separating them. That said, of course, there have no doubt been numerous name changes and reshuffles since the early 80s, so I'll take your word for it.

Cheers all.

From stuff that has been said in the past I've always understood that Alcuin College was a smaller building within the grounds of Vanbrugh College. If they're seperate then maybe it just means one is owned by the other? *shrug*

Wasn't there, but having spent three years at York uni, am 100% sure they're completely different buildings.

Vanbrugh is much more likely. Plus I've played there so don't ruin it for me.
