Think it's only logical they learn basic things that quick, after all for them it's still a matter of survival, whereas we're being kept safe by our parents in houses etc.
It didn't say anything about long term memory though, did it? I'd be really surprised if the combined forces of long and short term (photographic) memory of a chimpanzee were stronger than man's version of the same, it'd probably move more towards a sort of 'instinct' with them. Quite possibly that's our main strength, being able to combine those two effectively.

Seems strange to suggest but perhaps these chimpanzee are showing better memories as they are showing evolutionary development?
