About "Flood I"

Got any interesting thoughts on a set of lyrics? Any that don't involve the word "indeed"? Find yourself struggling to decipher all those obtuse references Von makes? Read "1959 And All That" and still no clearer? Nope, us neither. Postcards found lying in a skip around the back of the Chemists can be found here... Don't say you weren't warned.

I hadn't founded on the dictionary the word "hallway". Should I know its meaning?

Once upon a time, when I was a much younger b'stard than I am today, and a mere stripling of evilness, I once asked my dad what a word meant. He gave me the one of the soundest pieces of advice I've ever had, and I pass it on to you today.

He said, " I can tell you what the word means, of course - but then you won't remember the meaning. If you go and look up that word in the distionary, then you'll remember it always." And by gods he was right.

I might suggest you use a better dictionary, or avail yourself of one of the online resources.

It also may (or may not) reference something a bit rude

If her [ahem] 'hallway' was moving like the ocean (lucky girl), then the "head of the river, the source of the sea" would have uterine connotations.

Wow - I've been listening to Floodland for almost 20 years and I've never looked at it in this way before. I thought it was all about drugs, but it looks like I've only been seeing it from one perspective. Thanks! :notworthy:

though i think, flood I is the anticipation; it's flood II is pure shagging music

i read Von quote somewhere (though i did it myself and gave it out on compilations years back) that flood I and II were destined to be one track - the record company thought it too long, so it was broken down - makes more sense as one track

something about drowning together :von:

I always thought it was about the collapse of Europe in the glare of Americanisation (within the context of the whole album) but there are some very obvious allusions to sex throughout. Lets face facts- Eldritch is a great lyricist who likes to play around with the meaing of words.

True, but it might be described as the upper reaches of the river, rather than the head, no?

So I've read the lyrics again, you're all trying to tell me it's about sex,but all they do for me is conjur up a flood in a ground floor flat and someone being rescued.

You're all sick.

Flood II is about sex, great sex by the sound of it.Sex with Liz McLaren after Keef gets a knock back type sex.

Catchy tunes though.

Anytime.

it's obvious, all that "sex" connotation, at least should be

About sex. Deffo. Remember:
