For my 1st post, I'll be talking about 'Under The Gun'

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

As for UTG, I do not mind it, but if comes across as a demo version to me, especially the start.

Oh, alright then.

I don't hate UTG but it's hardly a fabourite either. It just never seems to go anywhere, although it sounds like it could with a rewrite an better production. Can't immediately remember any live versions to compare.

I like YCBTO. One of Eldritch's funniest lyrics.
Any more of that and we'll be round your front door with the quick-setting whitewash and the shaved monkey.

Welcome to HL. You post non sequiturs; you may fit in nicely.

P.S. Go with your gut feeling on YCBTO.
I also post sequiturs; variety is the spice of life.

I went with my gut for UTG, don't see why I wouldn't do the same for any other song! What does your gut tell you about those songs?

YCBTO is a tender and subtle love song, probably one of the most beautiful things Andrew has ever written. I don't know why these barbarians can't see that. Their hearts must be two sizes too small.

As for Under the Gun, it's a fine tune! I quite like it--I also like the half-cover/half-original aspect of it. That being said I do think it's a shame that it is more than likely to go down in history as the last studio recording of TSOM, but that's at least in part because I would love to hear shiny, polished studio versions of Summer and Crash & Burn.

Alas, I doubt we ever will.
The fact that YCBTO elicits such a response means there must be *something* to it. Good or bad, it's probably not boring. The worst crime a song can commit is to make the listener feel indifferent to it.

The half original/half cover aspect is interesting to me - from what I read, it was Nunn's music that she didn't use because it was 'strange and dark' and she 'couldn't get anyone excited about it'. Though strange and dark seems to be AE's territory, so I'm not surprised he snatched it up. It seems like he's always working with different people for each album. I wonder if that's because he works better with other people than he would solo.

Agreed, and if the live version you're referring to is the one I saw on Youtube, agreed!

Terri Nunn also gives me a boner.

Hey, I like tons of death metal too. Though 6FU, I have to say, is really stock and generic death metal. Cannibal Corpse, at least the early stuff, is a little more chaotic and interesting. And I love the hilarious lyrics!

I'm definitely pasty. I don't know how white Jesus was, as I wasn't alive in that time period, and all I have to go by are history books, the bible, and what people tell me. The alias is a lyric from a 'song' a few buddies and I wrote about 5-6 years ago. We get drunk and make novelty music, and 'white like jesus' was something I said because it sounded funny to me and semi-offensive to others at the time.

I like SFU as Chris Barnes was very nice and interesting when I interviewed him for Hails & Horns, and their cover versions are different!
CC have the best song titles ever:
Addicted To Vaginal Skin
F#cked With A Knife
Hammer Smashed Face
etc
Real feminists they are!

Hahaha, don't forget about "She Was Asking For It".

I don't think they're anti-feminism, more pro-free speech. :)

No, I really think they are full of $hit!

I heard the singer say none of what they do is meant to be funny!

They are total BS merchants

I can tell you for a fact that they watch tapes of "Barney" on their tour bus!

That's the thing about humour, the unintentional stuff can be a lot funnier if it's trying really hard to be serious!

markprindle.com has some incredibly funny reviews of CC albums. He even took the time to read the lyrics to all the songs, and interpret them! ("Addicted To Vaginal Skin" - A shaman turns the narrator into a zombie, and the spell can only be broken by the eating of vaginal skin. But oh no! After the curse is lifted, he finds that he has become ADDICTED to it! Sample rhyme: "Even though now I'm dead within/My mouth drools as I slice your perineum")

How can that possibly be taken seriously, unless you live in the bible belt and you're over 60 years old?! If the band says none of that is supposed to be funny, I don't believe them. I'll have to have a chat with the vocalist next time they come to my town.

I also hope there aren't any rules for going off topic.

Hello all! I'm also new, I read White Like Jesus' post about Under The Gun. I'm a former radio announcer, but I was a DJ for Big Band and Easy Listening stations and The Sisters were one of those bands not compatible with our format. So I would bring the promo 12"'s home like everyone else did, either for myself or my son. Under The Gun was the song that I thought at the time had the most potential commercially but I never understood why it didn't take off. Thanks, and nice place someone has here.
