Err, no. I've never heard of him, actually. Did I inadvertently say something funnier than intended? What can you tell me?timsinister wrote:You haven't read any Tom Sharpe novels have you?How do you convince accountants that life is enriched by reading Plutarch?
This is true. It's also why my public college students are borderline illiterate, while the ones at the private university are an absolute joy to teach--because they actually read.SINsister wrote:That's public high school, not private or parochial, of course.sultan2075 wrote:High school is paid for by the government here...

The most successful tyranny is not the one that uses force to assure uniformity but the one that removes the awareness of other possibilities, that makes it seem inconceivable that other ways are viable, that removes the sense that there is an outside.

His 'Wilt' series deals with a polytechnic lecturer whose college is trying to crowbar high literature and philosophy into plumbers, accountants, and cooks. It just seemed like a direct copy...in real life!sultan2075 wrote:Err, no. I've never heard of him, actually. Did I inadvertently say something funnier than intended? How did it come to pass that the notion that knowledge and education are ends in themselves (rather than means to an end), become, well, so old-fashioned?sultan2075 wrote:How do you convince accountants that life is enriched by reading Plutarch?
The fundamental cause of the trouble is that in the modern world the stupid are cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubt.

Actually, in this case, I blame 20th century American progressive "reformers," chief among them John Dewey.
