Maybe back then, but now they're more like 21st Century Cohors Reformata/Evocata. The tactics are pretty much the same (minus the throwing of pila) with a touch of Saxon/Norman shield-wall and cavalry and the added joys of pepper spray and tazers. It's getting to the point now where they're more of a paramilitary force than a pure police force. Which does not bode well.

Mind you, I'd like to see how well they'd cope with some organised rioters armed with stink bombs and rotten eggs (organic, free range, of course). It's a tad difficult to concentrate on beating the proverbial out of someone while all you can do is repeatedly empty the contents of your stomach. :twisted: :twisted:

The cavalry, however, are a little bit trickier to deal with...
I don't necessarily agree with everything I think.

The choice of article is actually based upon the phonetic (sound) quality of the first letter in a word, not on the orthographic (written) representation of the letter. If the first letter makes a vowel-type sound, you use "an"; if the first letter would makes a consonant-type sound, you use "a." So, if you consider the rule from a phonetic perspective, there aren't any exceptions. Since the 'h' hasn't any phonetic representation, no audible sound, in the first exception, the sound that follows the article is a vowel; consequently, 'an' is used. In the second exception, the word-initial 'y' sound (unicorn) is actually a glide [j] phonetically, which has consonantal properties; consequently, it is treated as a consonant, requiring 'a'.
