Today I felt all arty so I went to the National Gallery of Victoria... and guess what I (unexpectedly) heard on the PA? Black Planet!!!!!
There is an exhibition currently on entitled Black in Fashion - Mourning to Night. It was a really interesting little exhibition, with lots of Victorian era gowns and other treasures, through to current day fashion items, all black-themed. There was a soundtrack to match which included The Sisters of Mercy, Black Planet and some other cracking choons.
I had intended to follow-up my previous comment with "Christ, before you know it they'll be walking upright and wearing clothes," but I thought that might be mean and could be construed as a little racist (I'm referring, of course, to the Australians who got there by way of the Old Bailey rather than the ones who'd been there for years and who believe that discovering a place that was already well-known to its inhabitants doesn't count as "discovery" at all. How would it be if I said "Oh look everyone! I've discovered New York!"? Yeah, not so much).
I'll settle for this little gem:

2 questions: as it's a publice performance would the recording artist get his share of ££s or do the museum ignore that little bit of legislation?
and why isn't the music something victorian and black like a music-hall chimney-sweep ("i'm only a short little chim-neyyy sweeeep/ but i've gorran enormous brush").

There were about 15 songs on the playlist (if you can call it that at an art gallery) from the turn of the 19th c through to now. Can't remember most of them - I was too excited to hear Black Planet. Others included Nick Cave, Christian Death, a jazz cover of Black Hole sun, a bit of Ella Fitzgeral I think..... dunno, sorry.
I think I'll be going to that as I'm currently living in St Kilda! Good call Mr Splintered Thing!
Melbourne is such a weird town. It's also full of pleasant little cultural suprises. Only last tuesday I watched a theatrical production of Venus In Furs. Tonight I'm seeing John Fox (originally of Ultravox) doing a special Audiovisual show thing. Now this, combined with clubbing every week...I'm beginning to find a great mix of pure brainless fun and real mental stimulation. Melbourne is still a city that feels a tad bizzare to me, but at this rate it might win me over.
Yep - it is worth the visit.
If you haven't been already, the gallery does have a few gems that are worth seeing.
I love Melbourne (not originally from here, moved here about 6 years ago) Most people either love it or hate it. You have to like the grey days if you want to live in Melbourne. (Mrs) Splintered Thing!
