Sisters hiatus

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. OK, so it has been around a year since I really sat down and listened to :von: I honestly think I over did it to the point of not being able to face his songs. The same thing happened with me and The Damned. Now I am back and raring to go at them.

Has this ever happened to anyone else? Does anyone care? What is the meaning of life?

I've had a few months off occasionally and then I start pining for all of The Reptile House at full volume or Temple. A tune will get in my head and I'll be straight back in there, then out comes a few boots and before I know it.....

It could be viewed as some sort of endurance test (seeing how long without not with :von:)

But I have to say generally speaking they're the only band on almost constant rotation.....

I find the seasons can sometime make a difference on what type of music I listen to on the most part, but Sisters fits in to all year round. I tend to always come back to the sisters if i need a lift. That and Bill Hicks is always a winner :notworthy:

Its a bit like pxxn films, you get bored of em but the best ones will always be watched again and again (even if you have to watch them in a mirror to make them look different)

I go through fits and starts with most of the bands/artists that I like. Then again, when you have a fair few albums in your collection you can't really listen to everyone all the time ... and still find the time to discover new stuff as well.

Anyhow, I reckon that you need a bit of time off every now and again to listen to other things so that it's fresh to come back to and remember again why you love them so much and how nothing else is quite the same.

From about 93 to 98 I basically stopped even caring if they were still active or not. Completely lost any interest. Feeling that way roundabout now too, I seriously haven't listened to anything by them in months.
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.

I completely fell out with them with the Pukkelpop 2001 gig. For 10 years they had been my number one band and then there was this way too speedy band with ugly shirts and a setlist I hated: too much new stuff that didn't quite cut it and the few old ones were only a shadow of their former selves. Then & there it was all over for me and I moved on...

After a while I began selling some of my bootlegs. And by doing that I realised I spoke with such passion about the band & records and I just couldn't leave them burried. I bought a bootleg cd with new tracks and got back in the groove.
Then the Tilburg & especially Lokeren 05 gigs renewed my trust in the band & I discovered the HL.

I just love the band so much and will forgive them for many mistakes...

Went for about a year of listening to little bar the Sisters.
Then a year of hating listening to them. I had a breakup which didn't help with my liking the band, Eldritch just seems completely unlikeable, and so many of the fans were just coming across as arrogant c**t, believing any goth band with a drum machine to be a ripoff.
I still have Anaconda on a tape in my car, and occasionally listen to bits of Overbombing, but I really can't be bothered with them much anymore.

Not being "bothered" about the SISTERS anymore was one of the reasons why I - more or less - disappeared from this lovely place for something like 18 months

A recently made friend (who is a Sisters Fanactic) re-awoken my LOVE Of The Sisters Of Mercy and hence my return to form and forum ;-)

Haven't listened to them in months, although I know it's something I'll come back to eventually. Bit like the speed really, can't seem to get myself clear of the filthy stuff. :wink:
I was underwhelmed by the two dates I saw on the Silver Bullet tour.
A crying shame, as there was a time when even an average gig by the Sisters was far superior to most other bands.
Maybe the next gig I go to will blow me away?
It'll have to be Glasgow, though, as I doubt I'd travel any further to see them now. Well, maybe A'dam, but then there's so much else for a boy to do in that most civilised of European cities...

I did that with Type O but not with the Sisters. I guess I have never overdid it, it has been just something constantly there for me. There were times when I listened to them less, but that was when I barely had time to listen to anything, working and getting my degrees at the same time.

a) Yes. But not with The Sisters, actually. Just this morning I had Floodland on, in repeat, and loved it just as much as I did in the twenty yrears before. This album makes something inside me resonate, I can't get enough of it.

I've been a fan of the band since the summer of 2005.

From that summer until summer '06 I listened to them constantly. Then I finally got round to discovering some similar bands so where I would've listened to the sisters before I may be listening to something like The Cure or The m*****n/etc.

Throughout 2007 I listened to them to and from school - for me they were a good way to start the day, especially some of the 1984 gigs, lots of energy - but not so much at home, not sure why!

Now that I've started collecting Sisters vinyls (along with others) I listen to them more at home but I like other bands too so the sisters aren't on constant rotation like they were from 05-06.

I must say, towards the end of 2007 I was getting a bit tired of them, the lack of product obviously limits what you can listen to but at the moment I'm really enjoying them, I've liked them for almost 3 years (nothing compared to some people on here!) so it's the longest time I've spent enjoying a band without totally removing them from my music collection! At the moment the 1984 gigs and Floodland are getting a lot of listens.

Crocodiles and Heaven Up Here are such landmark albums in my life.
Then I noticed cracks were starting to appear come Porcupine but, held my council. I mean, The Bunnymen were allas one of those bands that delivered - look at the excellence they would stick on a b-side ~ Broke My Neck (long version) - a work of genius!
Ocean Rain was trumpeted by this "The Greatest Album Ever Made" bollocks, which I questioned. I'd heard The Killing Moon and it wasn't my Bunnymen, the follow up Silver was another dent in my Bunnyarmour. I didn't buy the album, I got it out the record libray. Taped it, gave it a chance. ...
wept.

I have tried to explain this on a Bunnymen forum, but.... well, I was wasting my time.
I ken this is a Sisters forum, but we all share a lot of experiences so Crocs and HUH are a big deal.

Never had moments of actual dislike, but I do admit I can go a long way without listening to the Sisters. Think it's been months since I last listened to them. Still, I'll never forget they were the band that started my music discovery craze :notworthy:

You've taken this a wee bit more serious than I intended, your aversion to OR being well known in these parts. :|

I have to agree that Crocs and HUH are the two best Bunnymen albums, but I rate OR higher than Porcupine, which to me has two great singles and an awful lot of filler. We'll never agree on this, which is fine, that's what life is all about.
But than maybe my standpoint shouldn't be too much of surprise, considering I also like Vision Thing and Zoon.
At first listen VT, with the exception of the opening two tracks, wasn't a Sisters' record, but I've come to appreciate it over the years. I'd even go so far to say that it has aged better than F&L&A (which isn't to say it's the better record).

As for Zoon, at the time it was released it felt like a massive betrayal of everything I'd ever loved about FOTN (much as you found OR), being so much heavier than anything I was listening at the time. Since then, my musical outlook has broadened and I've actually found a lot of layers beyond the initial sonic assualt. The production is also fantastic, which IMO is the one thing that let's down Mourning Sun.

As for greatest albums ever made; the last four EATB records, in Mac's humble opinion, have been the greatest thing he's ever done.
Go figure.

Okay, that's a fairly wide ramble off topic.

We discussed this several times. Glad you made it back! :wink:

I never stopped listening but the lack of internet and other means made me think that the Sisters did not exist anymore after 1993 so in 2001 I also heard the yet unreleased songs for the first time. I quite liked them, still do. :D

i never stopped listened!!!(from i was 12 or 13 and i couldn´t stop of hearing theyr greatest hits album)
but from my first gig, leeds 2001 it was when my crazyness started!!!

i listen more bands obviously, but as i´m a sisters collector and more or less i´m always receiving new items i´m always on it!!!

same here, Sisters and their music opened my music taste in the way like no others band/s before. and agree, i never had a moment of some aversion to their music, but satiation i sth. what is now. :notworthy:

I have to admit that there are times of pure hatred for the lack of a new album that result in the current favorite of the month being The Merry Thoughts. Most unfortunately I must admit that Millennium Done I: Empire songs and especially Psychocult are the best Sisters albums that are not Sisters albums. Mr. Arkham even includes the obligatory references to T.S. Eliot. Too bad I can't persuade him to cover all the unreleased Sisters tracks. Imagine a tMt version of Crash And Burn?

It'd be a f*ck lot better than the 30th shoddy live bootleg version we have to look forward to otherwise.

Back to waiting I guess.
