MARES VIVAS REVIEW

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

Back from Portugal, always nice to be there!

After a few good gigs during the SB tour and one really horrible (Malmö) my expectations still was pretty high. According to my girlfriend I’m a hopeless optimist and in this case she proved to be right….

The setlist was the same as usual, although the order was a little bit different. The sound was good, but Jürgen has never been able to produce that characteristic Sisters-sound. I’ve always thought that he should stick to Project Pitchfork and those crappy industrial bands he started off with.

The performance wasn’t convincing, Ben and Chris did their best and has improved since 06. But the main man lacked of energy and obviously wasn’t really into it. One thing is for sure, his voice was very weak, whispering, mumbling or this high pitch screams. Right now I'm listening to a recording of Giving Ground from 93 (Crystal Palace). Back then he had a voice but now it’s out of tune and not at all what it used to be. If you only do a few gigs a year you still have to maintain the voice in between. I don’t know if he was ill or not but this has been a fact for years now.

Still I had a good time, Lucretia and Flood I was really good. But until next time Von needs to see some magician that can help him with his voice, hire a bass player (god damn it!) and write some new catchy sing-a-longs…

And if he can't come up with a "new, catchy sing-along" then he could always throw YCBTO into the mix :D

@ Diego: Yes, I've heard him singing on Flood II, and I also have his voice on the recording. Now that I listen to the recording I notice that even Ben with his strong voice became quiet, so it must definitely have been a technical problem. I'm not at all happy with the sound guy, because there's always a sound problem at a Sisters gig. At least this time it improved soon enough, but that's just a minor excuse.
However, it might also be a question of position (as usual): I was on the left side in the front row. Maybe I had better sound there than the rest of you had elsewhere...

I do like his f**king singing, but it was the lack of singing that made me disappointed.

Never mind...
As usual, those complaining the loudest are the people who haven't even been there...
Attending a Sisters gig is an experience of fun, that you can either share or not. There's no point discussing it. Yes, there are better bands, who've kept better voices, with a more reliable sound quality, and who offer more of what the average audience expects (Nephilim in London 2008, Cure 2008, Alien Sex Fiend 2007, Bauhaus 2006 etc.).

So what???

You know; i saw many bands, from electronic boys like Depeche Mode and I Am X to the ancient rock like Motorhead and The Stooges (not the least, in Vons opinion) and no matter what, even when soundmen looked like the usual ponytail-pot-smoking-sleeveless-leather-jacket-wearing-rednecks, they could fix a decent sound or at least something that sounded like an average sound.

We can blame the sound engineer, the toilet ladies, the food, the weather etc. for the weak sound, but mainly it's Andrew Eldritch.

(And face it: also when it's a great show, it's Andrew Eldritch.)

@xfloorshowx... :lol:

@eva...you are so correct! a Sisters show is more than just a concert. I think everyone on here knows what the songs are supposed to sound like. However, I'm sure many go to see them for other reasons..to see friends, the atmoshphere the tends to surround the event, etc. I, for one, always looked forward to hearing a good one-liner from :von: . He tends to get off some good ones when he's in the right mood. Sorry, but I enjoy his dark humor!

Personally, I would have loved to have been there, even if it was pouring rain, 50 degrees, no sound and :von: just reciting the lyrics. Wtf, it's still TSOM!!! :notworthy:

I agree, but when was the last time we had a real good one-liner from Von? 2001?

Smoke & Mirrors, can't really recall any.
SB, did he say anything between songs?

Of course I also agree, but sometimes i feel like a Michael JAckson fan who tries to defend his royalness, while the world knows that noses drop off and luna parks in the backyard are getting bankrupt. You know it: this is the part where sounds are bad, setlists won't change and wireless mics don't work.

but who cares! ha. James Blast.
