Twitter

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

No, just wondering if anyone else used it.

No, it's not had big media coverage like Facebook, MySpace etc - and it serves a different purpose.

I have been sort-of aware of it for a while. But I think the last thing the world needs is me twittering even more than I already do

me too to be honest

but part of what i do involves keeping up to date with emerging trends, so i at least owe it to myself to work out what it can and cant do, and how we might be able to utilise it for our client sites...

And Facebook just changed itself into an even bigger mess recently. The new version is crap! (not to mention the new version of Last.fm)

I don't think that Twitter can be called a social network. That's not its purpose, and that's why comparisons with social networks such as MySpace and Facebook ultimately fail. Twitter is more akin to SMS messaging en masse, but less intrusive.

In that case, I obviously don't know enough about it. Off for some research...

This might explain it better. I don't go to the twitter website - I use a Google widget called BeTwittered (I use a customised Google page as my browser homepage) to display latest Twitter posts (and to post my own). Embedded like this you can perhaps see how it's about bite-size communication like SMS rather than blogging or social networking:
