Any one got any info the following areas i.e. are they decent enough to live in?
Pondering a job/location change and looking at what's in our price range...

North Kelvinside
Strathbungo (next to Strathgeorge & Strathzippy?)
Extremely early days and as likely to come to naught as anything, but I reckon you gotta do the research.
The missus won't move back to Aberdeen and besides, it's shite for gigs.

I'm familiar with all of them except Strathbungo, which I gotta say I've never even heard of, which leads me to believe it must be South/East, which you want to avoid IMHO because trendy West Endy is where it's at.Erudite wrote: Shawlands

Shawlands - is sarf of the river, but a decent enough place certainly. Has its good and bad areas but is generally pretty alright.
Broomhill - Similar to the above only it is Norf of the river, and a smaller area geographically I'd say
North Kelvinside - contrary to what Dark may tell you it's NOT Maryhill, if you go looking near the Kelvin (in the Kelvinbridge/Hillhead/Hyndland area) you're onto a winner IMHO. Near Great Western Road and Byres Road. My favourite part of town.
Another suggestion - you could do worse than to search in the Finnieston/Anderston area if you want good links to the town, or the Merchant City if you want to be IN it (though that'd be a flat and not a house. Actually most of these places are flat-land rather than house-land).
Bearsden is another consideration, but it's no cheap!

As for the other 3:Shawlands - not too far from town but far enough to feel cut off from it, but with good train & bus links. As it has plenty of pubs and restaurants and its own South Side character, that appeals to some peopole (but not me). It covers quite a large area and neigbourhoods tend to vary - some streets have better reputations than others.
Broomhill has some nice flats, and is just along from Partick, which has very good transport links and shops. It's one of these areas that I never go to, but seems to be OK. I would avoid most of the pubs on Dumbarton Road though.
North Kelvinside seems to comprise the Botanic Gardens area, Kelvindale, Kirklee and stops just short of Maryhill. It's just north of Byres Road/Hillhead/Hyndland, and does benefit from that association. In reality it's very mixed and has some very nice flats near the river (mind the rats!) and some rather posh bits too (Kirklee), but has its share of dodgy areas. Around Queen Margaret Drive is a bit run down but Wilton Street has a lot of nice flats - I used to stay in one there so big that we would ride a bike down the hall!
Other possible affordable areas worth considering are Scotstoun, Dennistoun, Partick and Yorkhill. The first two have a rough reputation but also some decent areas and are popular with 'young professionals'. Partick and Yorkhill may be more expensive because of their location. Also, the Anderston/Finnieston area (where I stay) is very central - just a short walk into town. If you fancy something further into town, the Merchant City (if you can afford it) or Garnethill or maybe Cowcaddens.

It's a major sea change for Helen even to consider moving back to a city, let alone somewhere the size of Glasgow. I did float Leeds on the grounds the company I work for now has an office there and due to the nature of the work they undertake it would be easy for me to get transferred. But apparently the People's Republic is in England!
I guess visiting some of the above areas would be a good first move (some might say the job thing would help too) to see how we feel.

Now that I'm nicely settled in my own place in the City Centre, here's my thoughts on the matter - there's plenty of parks in Glesga, you just have to look at a map or even look out your window to find 'em. Glasgow Green's almost on my doorstep

Broomhill is nice, it's next door to Jordanhill where I stayed for 2 and a half years. It's similar to most places in Glesga, being that you have a posh area, not so posh and then a coupla high rises in a ghetto, all within a few streets of each other. Strangely everyone seems to get on with their own business and upsets are few and far between.
North Kelvinside is even nicer. I lived on Kirklee Drive next to the river for 18 months, just behind the Botanic Gardens. Situation ideal, as very quiet and a 10 min walk from Byres Road. Now a flat-house there will be expensive, but very lucrative in the long term.
I also know of several other good areas around the City - Tollcross in the East End, (James Blast's own) Hampden-Rutherglen and Denistoun being nice areas to stay. Just avoid everywhere else sarf of the river
