Eldritch

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

Where'd he get the name from?

I understand that Taylor would be a tad dull for a bombastic love god but "Eldritch"?

Anyone know?

Back in the late 70s / early 80s, it was standard punk and post-punk practice to carry on signing on the dole while you were in a band. An unlikely-sounding stage name was de riguer unless you wanted the DHSS to catch up with you via reading the music press...

the story i've heard (firsthand from marx), which doesn't seem to fit 100% with the timelines we all know about, is that they were about to be interviewed by nme (or was it melody maker? i forget) and they heard that fellow leeds band gang of four had been in the papers the week before with their real names and gotten in trouble with the dhss, so they made up nicknames for the interview :D

i dont know where andy came up with his surname from, or how long he'd been thinking about it, but when they first met, clare always used to think mark was called gary and it had become a bit of a an injoke, so it seemed natural for him to become gary marx (eg: marx = mark's)

they couldn't think of anything for craig so they used his old school nickname: lurch

they continued to call him lurch for the first few interviews. not sure when exactly, or why, they stopped. possibly he'd stopped signing on by then...?

marx has since expressed his regret at not using his real first name, and just using a fake surname, like eldritch did... its caused him much confusion over the years

It never crossed my mind it was a pseudonym.

Mark Pairman (or Pearman, depending on the source you take it from) is the man. :D

Quiffy can probably confirm which is correct.
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.

yup - i always thought that it had a very goth ring to it. how comes von really tries to distance himself from anything goth?

i especially found it ironic that they recruited Pat whom was the epitome of all things goth looking!!
