An article full of distortions, inaccuracies, and outright lies. Scaremonger much?

While I am very suspicious of the way this government seems to think that it can whittle away at civil liberties, this article is sensationalist tripe and fails to put together a decent argument against the government.

It's not a patch on the well-argued and well-presented arguments of Shami Chakrabarti (currently ranking as one of my favourite people in the UK at the moment).

The author starts with the assertation that "In the past 10 years I have collected reports of many instances of draconian punishments, including the arrest and criminal prosecution of children, for thought-crimes and offences against political correctness."

A frightening vision implying a society where you will be imprisoned for thought-crime!

However reading through all the examples given in the article, they all end up with "no charges were pressed" or "released without charge". The one case that actually managed to get as far as a court was dismissed as "nonsense" by the judge.

This suggests that the judicial system is coping very well with dismissing all such misinformed and misguided allegations and arrests.

As such, the author has just written an argument that can be demolished easily by any government.

It's a shame because the gradual erosion of freedom in the UK needs to be challenged (again, Shami Chakrabarti has been a champion of the cause, and you'd be better off quoting her arguments). But doing so in the ill-argued reactionist manner of the Daily Mail is never going to win a debate.
