Dredd is sort of a guilty pleasure. I enjoy the movie, but I know I shouldn't.

The most successful tyranny is not the one that uses force to assure uniformity but the one that removes the awareness of other possibilities, that makes it seem inconceivable that other ways are viable, that removes the sense that there is an outside.

Dredd was okay until the last 15 minutes.
I compared it to making a top notch meal & then dropping the whole lot on the floor just before you get it to the dinner table.

The American Pies don't hold my attention, are they any good?
Cronenberg never fails to disappoint although, he seems like a nice man. Any fillum with Tom Cruise on the cast list is an 'avoid' same goes for Plank of Wood Law (Gattaca excepted) and THanks (up till Green Mile and Perdition).

Depends how you define "good" - if it includes puerile teenage gags about coitus, self-pleasuring, and bo@bs, then yes, they're good.James Blast wrote:The American Pies don't hold my attention, are they any good?
Seriously, though, they're not that bad - just don't go in expecting The Bicycle Thief. You want to be thinking more Deuce Bigalow, Carry On, Benny Hill. Definitely helps to be a chap watching them (the w@nking gags have more relavance), and if you've got nothing better to do for 90 mins or so then they're better than working. Not worth giving up an evening doing something else for, though.

Easy Rider
Iconic. Ground-breaking. Incredible Soundtrack (they say).
Crap movie, I didn't think much of the music either, and while I'm here what about Zabriski Point?
Dull, dull, dull until "Come in number 51 Your Time is Up", that bit's great.

Evil Dead II? The movie that has no reason to exist. A total rehash of the first but without the freewheeling bedlam that made it great. The only thing it really has going for it is the hand scene, but even that ends up being overdone and dragged out well beyond the point of being effective.
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.
The Deerhunter - seems longer than Vietnam...

seconded - except for the russian roulette scenes, which could have been longer (at the expense of the more boring parts )Gollum's Cock wrote:Not stalking, but another good exampleabridged wrote:The Deerhunter - seems longer than Vietnam...

An old one but it has to be said, Logan's run.
I can't bear the guy who plays Logan, the whole film is an annoyance and yet...I find myself compelled to watch it when it's on . It's like some weird compulsive self torture that I can't hep but indulge in.

Love Waterworld, always thought it was suprisingly good considering the critical reaction.mh wrote:Let's go for the other side of Marmite too, eh? I'm quite shamelessly fond of Judge Dredd. Utter nonsense and a travestry so far as the source material is concerned, but enjoyable enough hokum all the same.
Waterworld's another I like. (I'm shallow like that - badoom-tssshhhh)
In terms of movies other people think are great but I loathe I would have to say V for Vendetta (in no way as good as the book and a frustrating waste of time), Ghost In The Shell II (awful artwork, boring plot), Croaching Tiger (snoozefest) and The Dead Poets Society (suicide is always a great option kiddies ).
