sunglasses indoors

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Sorry to hijack this thread, but I've literally spent 5 years hunting for decent aviator or deep pantoscopic frames to replace my existing ones. My eyes are severely light sensitive, so I need to wear sunglasses in just about all light levels and carry 3 different pairs around all the time. As the market has been dominated by square or letterbox styles for the last 10 years, I've had no joy whatsoever getting frames that suit my needs or my face. I need frames with good coverage and sturdy enough to hold glass lenses. So I'd be very grateful if EvilBastard or anyone else has any idea of where to get good quality (preferably black) aviators, as the situation is getting desperate and I'm now resorting to Sellotape on my old frames :(

Ray Ban do prescription stuff & they have a (IIRC) lifetime guarantee.

They are fecking pricey though.

Yes they are a bit steep. Prescription isn't so much the problem, but I need a dark red lens with 4% light transmission, so I doubt that's in their range! Cheers for the tip though - if Rayban can sell just the frames, I'll look into ot.

Mr. S - given the amount of VLR you need then regular sunglasses aren't likely to cut it. Do you have an optician or outdoors shop near you that specialises in glacier-suitable eyewear? Most glasses made for high-altitude snow work have a 7-8% VLT, and most places dedicated to the sport can customise the lenses for your needs.
If you don't have a suitable place in your 'hood you might want to check out Opticus in Colorado - I've bought a couple of pairs of glasses from them over the years and they really know their onions. Any number of different frames to choose from depending on the size of your phiz. If you do get in touch with them ask for Fred Seitzman. Their stuff isn't cheap (the last lenses I bought from them were $250) but given the extremely specialist nature of what you're looking for this might be the place to check out.

PS - if you just want the frames then they sell those too - you'll want to check out the Extreme Exposure section of their site.

I've got some prescription sunglasses.. wear them in nightclubs sometimes, especially if I don't want people to notice the size of me pupils. :lol: :innocent:

Belated thanks EB :notworthy: I've tried the glacier goggles route before but the tint wasn't dark enough and the side shields were a pain. Lenses are no problem (I can get the 2 - 4% VLT ones I need from Corning or Zeiss) but frames are another matter. I've found that satety style frames with custom tinted side shields work best for me, but they're just about impossible to get in anything other than silver, brown or gold just now :( Rayban seem to do aviators in my size (yet another problem) so I might have luck there.

No worries, Mr. S - the side shields on traditional glacier glasses are definitely a bugger, but if you need protection on the sides you might want to consider wrap-around type shades rather than the classic style with leather/nylon side shields. Something like Julbo's (www.julbo-eyewear.com) Dolgan style where the lenses curve around to either side, and with minimal shields which are easily removable. If you're wedded to the aviator style then the Micropore range from Julbo might fit the bill - you can remove these side shields if you need to.
If you absolutely must have Aviators then give stop by your local Sunglass Hut - the chain is owned by Luxottica (who own RayBan), so you should be able to find a decent range of stuff.
Depending on how heavy your scrip is you might need the lenses back-routed to sit properly in the frame, but the lens maker should be able to manage this.
