Probably, it comes from the very rude English press ...

They steadily make up rude things in order to badmouth bands,
especially those coming from the North ... and it's very easy to just
copy this. And this term "goth" ... they also apply it to All About Eve,
or Alien Sex Fiend ...
I never really understood what, for example, these two bands had
in common to make them go under one and the same classification.
Maybe I'll get it someday ...
