I was wondering if anyone knew the origins behind the Damage Done artwork, essentially the origin or source of the photo on the cover.
Also given how precise Von is/was about the images, font and layout etc, I'm surprised that they used Gustave Dore's image from Dante's Divine Comedy for Body and Soul as Factory band Crispy Ambulance had used the same image a couple of years earlier.

I vaguely remember reading (on here somewhere probably) that the DD sleeve is a frame from an old silent movie?

Other covers:
Alice is "Blue Nude I" by Henri Matisse
Body Electric is "Head VI" by Francis Bacon
lachert mentions Anaconda, it's the cover of Alice Cooper's "Billion Dollar Babies":
Reptile House see lachert's post
Temple Of Love is a commissioned piece I believe.
As Randall Flagg mentions, Body And Soul is from the Divine Comedy.
Any more?

I have a painting very similar to this at home done by a friend's mother, no wonder Andrew S fell in love with it!markfiend wrote:Other covers:

Suffice to say it was the first and last time the drummer did the artwork.

And while I'm being helpful, there have been doubts raised elsewhere on here about the source & lineage of the Dante image for B+S.
Suggestions of deliberate sabotage and thievery are wildly over-stated, but I will say that the image was brought to the attention of The Sisters some time before it was actually used, and some time before the Crispy Ambulance record (which I've never heard of).

Ah. Like I said, I had understood that it was a commissioned piece (possibly from an art student). Thanks for the clarification.Chairman Bux wrote:Temple was a Nanker Phelge job.
Although most people will probably have to look "Nanker/Phelge" up...

One day over high tea Danny told me 'that bastard Eldritch robbed our idea'. Though I believe it was to be a white colourationChairman Bux wrote:And while I'm being helpful, there have been doubts raised elsewhere on here about the source & lineage of the Dante image for B+S.

Goths have feelings too
is the origin of anaconda really the alice cooper release, or was it also simply used thatfor and does come from a different source?
btw, bayon is a great place to be, although reptiles come from all over the world these days. middlesection comes quite close to the cover image.

Tsk. You should know better than to trust anything Mr Horigan tells you, especially over high tea - he only ever tells the truth after 8pm.paint it black wrote:One day over high tea Danny told me 'that bastard Eldritch robbed our idea'. Though I believe it was to be a white colouration

yeah, that matches what i heard...
i was told that the dante image was going to be the artwork for salvation's debut album "clash of dreams", scheduled for release on merciful release (but the colours reversed - red image on white bg) until they fell out with the MR staff, or possibly eldritch himself, and the album was binned - along with the artwork
something like this i guess:
although the timelines dont quite work - from what i heard, CoD was supposed to be released in 1985, so unless danny had shown it to eldritch in late 83/early 84, i son't see how that works
or have i got the proposed release date for CoD wrong?

I was always under the impression that Mr E. was wholly responsible for the minimalist TOL artwork.

That's fascinating, however the Crispy Ambulance 10" was released in 1980.Chairman Bux wrote:And while I'm being helpful, there have been doubts raised elsewhere on here about the source & lineage of the Dante image for B+S.

Any more of that and we'll be round your front door with the quick-setting whitewash and the shaved monkey.
Y used to have a site with all of the test pressings (he owned them) on it. I remember there was an invoice to Gary Marx for the pressing costs, etc. The Damage Done cover was Gary's idea wasn't it?pikkrong wrote:so, what about Damage Done...? a silent movie?
