Love it. It was great to sing along as I cycled into town this morning.

Oh, and a few changes since yesterday:
HAVE SLEPT WITH ALL THE GIRLS IN BERLIN
... Shake me down again
... Shake me down and then
... Shake me down again
I can wake up in this zoo
I've been used and abused
I've been chased and I've been bruised
I can take what I've been through
I've been naked on the news
I've been debased and disabused
Just leave me downtown when you're through
Turn me over
Turn me in
I have slept with all the girls in Berlin
Girls on smoke and girls on weed
Girls on coke and girls on speed
Girls who choke and girls who smile
Girls who swallow in denial
Girls in crisis, ultra-hipped
Weird as Isis, wide as Egypt
Girls in cars and girls on ships
Girls in bars and girls on strips
Girls on journeys, girls on trips
Girls on gurneys, girls on drips
And a girl too far with pale blue lips so shake me down again
Girls like you with poison tips
Girls like you like pistol whips
Girls in over-zealous green
With a third degree in jealousy so
Turn me over
Turn me in
I have slept with all the girls in Berlin

Just noticed something yesterday and got to see if any of you can shed light.
When I was younger I really liked the book and film of Christiane F (link if you're not sure http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christiane_F.). I re read the book recently and then looked it up on the net. As I was reading I came across the wikipedia entry for Bahnhof Zoo and at the bottom it says that the Sisters' Slept was inspired by this station.

Had any of you heard this before? I guess if it was it's related to the prostitution that did/does(?) goes on there?
I love this song by the way.

... it has taken me some time to get the joke of that song ...
... maybe because I had the pleasure of having it performed live
more or less straight into my face in some not so jocular mood ... ... : : ...
(No complaints, I know who I am, and I won't give all that
much for my personal perception, though irreplaceable to
me as a safeguard tool) ...
However, I do not believe, it inspired them to write this song ...
Or that this song, somewhat primarily, referred to prostitution ...
Berlin is sort of anchor word in music ... and has been quoted
by Leonhard Cohen as well - ... first we take Manhatten, then we take Berlin ...
From that point of view ... maybe not the best of strategies to chose for Berlin.
Could have been ...all the girls in - Hamburg ... but this might have emphasized
the prostitution line even further ... New York, Detroit, Hong Kong, Shanghai or
Alma Atar ... might also have been an alternative. Anyway, now it's Berlin.
In addition, other people might be able to offer you other explanations ...

I find it funny, they mention The Sisters of Mercy there ... kind enough, though.europa wrote:As I was reading I came across the wikipedia entry for Bahnhof Zoo and at the bottom it says that the Sisters' Slept was inspired by this station.

I've added the [citation needed] tag to the Sisters reference. I've certainly never heard it before.

I recall having heard that before, although damned if I can remember where. I do remember having taken it with the requisite amount of salt, as it didn't come from Himself, with whom salt is, of course, also required...if perhaps in smaller quantities. Sometimes.
Who can begin conventional amiability the first thing in the morning?

ok: so how long did it take anyone to work out that von is actually boasting about making the-beast-with-two-backs with the lovely ms nunn? as i recall she was the only girl in the band "berlin"...oh and didn't she sing on some song or other....?
btw- my equally brilliant better half suggested it was a possible reference to band-members (and band-members' members) filled orgies in the german capital... though if i'd had my cock up the huss-bag's dirtbox i'd be keeping quiet about it

Well I was handsome and I was strong
And I knew the words to every song.
"Did my singing please you?"
"No! The words you sang were wrong!"

It does seem to be the obvious answer, doesn't it? Then again, with the obvious answer is rarely the only answer, and he usually likes his lyrics to work on more than one level.eastmidswhizzkid wrote:ok: so how long did it take anyone to work out that von is actually boasting about making the-beast-with-two-backs with the lovely ms nunn?

What a repulsive image.
We forgive as we forget
As the day is long.
As the day is long.
Although given Huss-bags propensity to publicise things ("you and me, we are blood brothers") you may not have any choice in the matter.
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.

Surely too many references to multiple girls for that to be the case? And the "girl too far with pale blue lips" suggests something altogether more disturbing. The prostitution angle makes more sense to me, especially with the repeated "shake me down again" (something the local police might do...)eastmidswhizzkid wrote:ok: so how long did it take anyone to work out that von is actually boasting about making the-beast-with-two-backs with the lovely ms nunn?

To me this whole song gives the impression of a guy, trying to escape a situation he sees (rightly so or not)
as emotional (and sexual) blackmail by means of - in first instance - emotional blackmail. This behaviour
then becomes a habit - but has no real effect on the original concern, whatsoever.
Another aspect is, say of course, positioning and prestige ... great fun here.

See: "grievous bodily harm" - acquitted of, or whatever that episode was about?stufarq wrote:Surely too many references to multiple girls for that to be the case? Perhaps something bad did happen to a girl in his company and that's "the girl too far with pale blue lips"? Would be pretty traumatic to say the least.
A friend of mine watched her girlfriend O.D. in the women's bathroom of a club once, she was never the same afterward.
Disclaimer: Only mentioning it in context to the possible meaning of the song lyrics we are discussing here.
"... because we're that kind of people."
Are we talking about a (possibly alleged) episode from Von's past? Doesn't ring a bell with me. Would an explanation upset the lawyers?Prescott wrote:See: "grievous bodily harm" - acquitted of, or whatever that episode was about?
