My goth influences in music were thanks to my heros, my FRIENDS that showed me a certain candle light in dark underground movements & that is where I found my new religion, new state of mind & soul and new me, in my very young teenage years.

Yes, the more astute, less alcohol addled members were correct in realising that I meant generally accepted music heroes rather than your own. But what the hell, all contributions accepted with thanks. Though I am genuinelly interested to hear about artists who are generally recognised as having influeneced the music of the last decade or so. Don't know Front 242 but I think Metallica might have a claim. Definitely recognised them in at least one track from Muse's latest album.

But Radiohead have influenced a lot of the music of the last decade. Unfortunately the bands they've influenced are all pretty much wank too:

Coldplay, Keane, Snow Patrol: they're just the ones that occur to me off the top of my head.

I like the fact that bands like Radiohead have no obvious reference point themselves though. When I listen to them (especially later albums) I can't hear their influences. While I may not particularly like a lot of their music, I admire bands who sound so individual.

What about the Bunnymen? You can hear them all over a lot of current music (by "current" I mean of course the last time I paid attention to new mainstream-ish stuff, which is about 8 or 9 years ago ).

Spacemen 3 have a huge influence too. Mogwai, Low, MGMT, BRMC, White Hills, Brian Jonestown Massacre, etc etc etc.

Well, I'd cite Joy Division as persistently inspiring stark and challenging bands in the same vein, c.f. Interpol, the Editors. They're also persistently great.
