"knocking on heaven's door" demo

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

has anyone got any background info on the demo of "knocking on heaven's door" on JansenClone's cd#2?

http://www.myheartland.co.uk/viewtopic. ... 20KNOCKING

ie: when was it recorded, and why? with a view to possible use as a b-side? the notes say it was taken from the "victims of circumstance" demo boot...

I have it on the Ultra Rare Trax boot, fades out and back in again about half-way through. I remember discussing this on Dominion about 90/91 ish, and it transpired back then that Warners had suggested an LP of cover versions as a possible project, so a few demos were knocked together. It comes from mid 84 ish I think, and would imagine there may be comtemporaneous demos of the likes of Emma and Jolene.

This is, of course, all hearsay.
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.

I allas wonderd if the 'Victims Of Circumstance' would surface on here. A mate taped it for me on a '70s Dad Style, shocking stereogram with tape deck affair' about 13 years ago. I was beginning to think it was bogus product. Jessica's Crime was on it, not a Sisters tune I believe?

HL 4 tells a good story :notworthy:

Mayhaps QB could enquire off his mate Mr Marx

I always really loved the Heavens Door demo. Interestingly, it doesn't sound much like the live version they used to do. Also interestingly, I wonder if that Duff chappy ever heard it, because the Guns n Roses version sounds not a million miles away from the way they've arranged the song on the demo (though, before I get electronically battered, the Sisters version is obviously far better). The fade out/in is annoying - I always assumed it was a recording mistake, or even someone turning a tape over, no?

I heard a bloke in a pub with an acoustic doing the same arrangement the other week too, so maybe there's a common origin.

It was produced by Hussey, hence the inclusion.
Legend has it that Marx made the tape for a friend, who copied it for someone else, etc...

Yes, it does sound like the product of a faulty tape deck. I got my Victims Of Circumstance tape from a certain basement shop in Leeds, which is probably where they all originated from. I did notice that Garden Of Delight has a fade in it, although it's on a record without a fade, so maybe the other songs exist without a fade.

Although thankfully Eldritch didn't sing it with the annoying "ay ayy ayyyy" part. (What the HELL was that about anyway?)

Dan

my story is that Gary gave to fan, needed some cash forwarded to Pete and on from there.

the blips are from human error - drop outs and the record head hitting the tape. So yes, there must be more than one source. Don't listen to it that much but have at least three sources, so will see if they are all the same
