Things to do in Berlin

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

Just booked a holiday to Berlin in September and was wondering if any Heartlanders had some recommendations of things to visit - perhaps things that aren't in your standard tourist guide?

The industro-parties there are major.
Eric Van Wonterghem (Belgian dude living there) organises a lot under the Schlagstrom moniker, check it out!

Cool city. One of the best. Lots to do.

Some of the following are admittedly pretty obvious:

KW Institute for Contemporary Art
Chapel of Reconciliation
Film Museum
Botanical Gardens
Tegel Castle
Berlin Art and Nostalgia Market
Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and the Jewish Museum
Berlin Wall Museum
Animal Garden
Treptower Park

Record stores aplenty there, I also recommend going up the Fernsehturm and have a spin around in the restaurant with a drink, great view from there! Apparently you can also go up the Reichtach and have dinner on the roof, should be nice.

Other than that, walk around and you'll fall in love with this fantastic city :D

There used to be (ok, so it was 20 years ago) a really incredibly wonderful second-hand clothing store in Berlin. Huge great warehouse of a place, sold clothes by weight, you could get anything there. I think it was in the eastern part of the city. Fabulous selection - any amount of black leather, military stuff - a great place to spend a wet Sunday afternoon.

Drawing a blank on the name - does it ring a bell to any Berliners?

Kleidermarkt Garage possibly? Awesome place indeed if so.

The Surrealist museum - Sammlung Scherf-Gerstenberg - is nice. You will be just missing their Hans Bellmer exhibit, but for example, they have Max Klinger and other Symbolist artists.
I wouldn't go to Berlin just to see it (unlike, let's say, the National Gallery in London), but if you're in Charlottenburg, then go for it. It's right across the street from Schloss Charlottenburg.

Oh, and there's the Kitkat Club.
But let me warn you, I've just been there and thought it was kinda lame. Their Goff night most definitely sucks.

Loved Berlin, and have fond memories of seeing Qntal at K17. Partly for the band, partly for the guys we met that night but mostly for the dodgy old bloke in a bar over the road who insisted he was ex-Stasi and introduced us to his Alsatian, Lyubich, who only responded to commands in Russian (this was in the East, naturally).

The best thing about the dog was that she only responded to formal, second-person plural commands (like the vous form in French). Siditye was OK, sadis was treated with disdain. But since we hadn't been formally introduced at that point ....
Names are just a souvenir ...

Maybe not everyones cup of tea but if you like history and have the stomach for it you could go to Sachsenhausen Concentration camp. It's 35 KM north of Berlin.

A friend of mine went there and said it is worth a visit even though it is quite daunting when you think what went on there.

If that's not for you, then I'm told the zoo is quite worth a visit.

That.

Also, the zoo (look for Knut the polar bear)
The Tacheles building on Oranienburgerstrasse has some crazy art during the day and great bars at night.
Checkpoint Charlie is probably worth a visit, along with the nearby museum of the Wall (I can't remember what it's called)
Take a stroll from the Brandenburger Tor along Unter Den Linden.
