questions about religion

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. If you live anywhere near Leeds you could stop by my old landlord, Paul Singh - he runs the corner shop in Burley Park, just opposite Beechwood Avenue (or at least he used to). He's a sikh chap - tell him I sent you and I'm sure he'd be happy to answer questions.

But to be honest, I recall that when Sikhs make it, they are supoposed to chant continously as they make it, so I personally wouldn't make it and just talk about what things other religions eat at baptisms/naming ceremonies etc. PLUS I have 'lergic' kids in my class so very rarely make and eat :lol:

I can't honestly imagine that anyone will take offence if you make the pudding and then explain its significance. You're not usurping something sacred - you're helping kids understand something about the way other people are, which is Important. And associating it with food is an easy way to help them understand.

i know, but i just wanted to be sure. if the food is only meant to be eaten at specific times within a specific context, i don't want to make it, but would instead do a subsititute. i like to be authentic, innit

I'd go ahead and make the puddin'. You're not sikh so it doesn't offend your sensibilities. Do you have any Sikh kids in the class? A smart move might be to ask one of them if they think their parents would be offended by it. Depending on the age of the kid they might be all sorts of chuffed to talk about what they believe, and what impact it has on their life.
You ask a grownup what they believe and they'll give you the "philosophical" answer. Ask a kid, "What does being a Sikh mean to you?" and you'll get something his viewpoint - and because it's coming from a kid the other kids will relate to it. It can get parents involved as well, which is never a bad thing.
