Fantasy Dinner Party

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

I need some time for the 4th. After re-reading I can have Carravaggio and Mr Niven, so I'm sorted - stuff Billy

1. He clearly doesn't eat
2. The chain-smoking might offend some people
3. He might insist on vetting the guest list
4. You'd have to make sure that your other guests were all shorter than him (so, Prince, Napoleon, and Tom Cruise) or cut 4" off the other dining chairs
5. He might insist on bringing a date, and apart from throwing your table arrangements completely off kilter, the date might be Fat Pat and your fridge-freezer just isn't that big
6. The sunglasses-indoors thing is fine for professional poker players but it's going to cause problems with a candlelit table

Apart from anything else, would you be comfortable standing in the front row, your ears bleeding from the bass, your lungs on fire from dry ice, knowing that he:
A. brought a bottle of Blue Nun as a gift
B. lets his cuffs dangle in the gravy
C. slurps his soup
D. leaves the seat up and doesn't flush
E. eats his spaghetti with a knife and fork

and that the deep tenor voice that propels Lucretia into the very depths of your DNA is actually a very chirpy cockney-sparra' in real life.

I'm not saying that any of this is true, or would happen, but would you take the risk?

Yeah, I think I might redirect my invite to Chris - I reckon he'd be the first to get blotto and crack out the Twister.

To help you in your decision making process

And for the weirdos among you, I'm fairly sure that's Burley Park, so get your camping equipment and binoculars ready!

Probably, but the question wasn't who would you want to marry, but who would you want to invite for dinner, wasn't it?

Why would you invite someone to dinner that you would not invite to share less intimate aspects of your existence with (and eating with someone is arguably a good deal more intimate than anything else - we tend to be far more open with our emotions around good food and wine then we do at other times)? I don't know that I would want to sit down to dinner with someone that I could not imagine spending considerable time with.

Then again, this could explain why most nights I sit alone with a Pot Noodle in front of re-runs of The Fall & Rise of Reginald Perrin on a black & white portable, quaffing Morisson's wine-lake rosé by the guttering light of a solitary birthday candle wedged into a pile of fag-ends in the tin tray from a take-away chicken-and-mushroom pie, but you should feel free to draw your own conclusions.
