My son (who's thirteen) is recently obsessed with "steampunk" Now I really feel like an old punker but he brought to my attention a band called Abney Park. Upon listening to their first album entitled "Death of Tragedy" I found much excitment in the fact that they really sound like the stuff were all into here on this forum. So, go out and check it out for yourself but do not be alarmed when you start feeling like a pirate or Gypsy for that matter because some songs reflect those personalities. Really interesting stuff....Arrrrr!! Wot do you fink?

A think Abney Park are treated with a bit of derision by the more pretentious end of my own generation... If its Steampunk you want, I highly recommend The Men Who Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing (the singer from Creaming Jesus is in 'em!).

Yes it's called "steampunk". Apparently it is derived from the Goff sub culture. And of course to each his/her own. I just autpomatically thought of the Nephs when I heard that first album It's more likme a watered down Nephilim with lighter guitar and lighter voice. But ya that was just my initial impression. I couldn't beleive my son was into this stuff. Made my happy and exicited knowing my son at least is original with himself. The term itself is so obscure around these parts and in others it's full blown and thriving. Interesting stuff nonetheless. Glad to have this experience with one of my own indeed.

Thanks for that Maisey. I love Creaming Jesus and am suprised I did not come across this until now. God, were have i been? Oh ya work. It comes from literature and movies more than anything else I think. Have you ever seen the film Wild Wild West? That was pretty much the first mainstream Steampunk thing (although the idea had been explored in some novels much earlier).

You could almost retrospectively describe stuff like HG Wells as Steampunk, being an actual Victorian with visions of a more high tech future.

It is a lot of fun though, and results in some seriously interesting outfits! Nice to hear the young 'uns are getting into. It's a lot cooler than most of the stuff the darkling kids have been up to in recent years (and I should know!).

Yes my son is very serious about this stuff. He's all decked out: Knee high boots, Victorian style coat, Different kinds of pouches and holster type belts, goggles top and bowler hats etc. I thought the "gothic look" was something else then my son walks in does it better than me, but with brown colours. Then i watch "Steamboy" and that's when I figured out that he was on to something. Upon listening to "the pop group" he say's, why do you think i also listen to weird and obscure music. I was floored and impressed. My pride shot straight up.Very fun for sure.
